SEPTA riders who cannot find a spot in the station's lot then have to move to the streets, literally. However, nearby residents do not think that the new garage will be an improvement, but rather cause more traffic on the town's narrow streets.

  • In response to a news story in the Daily News yesterday, the state Department of Education stated that "there is no law that prohibits school police officers in Pennsylvania from carrying a firearm." The school-police officers' union has been attempting to arm its officers but the Philadelphia School District said it was opposed.

  • Funds are dwindling for the Philadelphia Museum of Art. As a result, it is cutting staff, deferring exhibitions, trimming salaries and, if approved, raising admission fees. Senior staff will take up to 10 percent in salary cuts and 30 positions are being eliminated. "We are committed to a balanced budget, and in order to achieve that we need to make changes this year that will help us out next year," said interim CEO Gail M. Harrity.

I was in love, and she had broken off with me," he said. "I was moping around. He tried to cheer me up."

  • Gov. Corzine said yesterday that the Garden State could receive close to $4 billion in federal stimulus money over two years to help pay for education and health care. The Democratic governor praised President Obama and his economic team for moving to jump-start the economy, and predicted that the stimulus money would help reverse Americans' skittishness. Corzine delayed his annual budget address to the Legislature by two weeks so he could get a better idea of how much federal help to expect.

  • Today in Vince Fumo's trial, an FBI computer expert will continue to testify about just how the Government went about finding so damn much incriminating shit on various computers.
  • Demonstrators protested the Philadelphia library closings yesterday at City Hall. Mayor Nutter and Free Library Director Siobhan Reardon were declared "in contempt of the people's court" by costumed members of the ad hoc Coalition to Save the Libraries. The two were accused of working to sabotage a judge's ruling to keep open 11 branches that had been scheduled to be shuttered. The demonstrators chanted and danced as the orchestra's music reverberated against the municipal marble.
  • Philadelphia Managing Director Camille Barnett is being driving to and from work by a uniformed officer in a marked police car because of a security threat made against her months ago. The threat occurred early last winter when a man who appeared to be homeless yelled obscenities and followed Barnett as she walked her two dogs near her apartment at the Phoenix. Ramsey decided that police should escort Barnett, particularly home from night meetings. "I don’t want to sound sexist, but I do take it more seriously... You got a woman that’s all alone," Ramsey said.
  • Trial resumes this morning in U.S. District Court for Sen. Vincent Fumo. Prosecutors have all but wrapped up the first phase of the complex federal corruption case against Fumo. Prosecutors have elicited testimony from a string of witnesses that they carried out numerous personal and political tasks for the senator. Today, U.S. Attorneys will plunge ahead with more witnesses in the second part of the indictment, charging that Fumo also defrauded a South Philadelphia nonprofit.
  • An Ocean County man who filed a discrimination suit against eHarmony saw justice yesterday. The Internet matchmaker reached a settlement agreement to provide same-sex matching services next year. The new service, Compatible Partners, will be marketed to gays and lesbians and be available through the eHarmony Web site and will debut March 31, 2009.
  • Vincent Fumo’s ex-girlfriend took the stand yesterday and testified to his high-flying, coddled lifestyle, his rages and romantic messages and his resolve to make others pay for his pleasures. Though she insisted that she still loved the troubled Senator, she spent the bulk of her five-and-a-half hours on the stand corroborating previous testimony relative to his turning government aides into personal servants.
  • We at Phillyist have just a little bit of a thing for animals, especially doggies and kitties (as if you haven't noticed). On the flip side, we're not too big on sleazy politicians. Especially ones under indictment for corruption. We know there's that whole "innocent until proven guilty" thing, so you'll have to forgive us if we're not giving Vince Fumo the benefit of the doubt in his federal corruption trial. So combine our love of our four-legged friends with our distaste for corrupt power-abusers, and you get a no-brainer for this week's Asshole of the Week.
