Yo, Philly in the News

  • And in other SEPTA strike news, the union is apparently considering a "revised offer" from SEPTA. Might the strike end by the evening rush hour, and perhaps more importantly, does the "revised offer" give in to some of the union's demands, which will pretty much require commuters to open up our checkbooks to cover increased costs?
  • Philadelphia Drivers: You can now be pulled over for using a handheld device in your car while driving. No more warnings and no other traffic offenses necessary. Do what's right—put it down!

  • In other happy sports news, the Eagles announced a $500,000 grant program to assist local animal welfare organizations. Among the recipients of grant money will be our friends at PAWS, who will receive money to support the construction of a low-cost spay and neuter facility in the city.
  • Deer at Valley Forge Park have a limited time left at the park. According to officials at the park, they could begin shooting massive numbers of deer as soon as next month.

  • In other unpleasant Penn news, police are investigating an alleged rape during a party at the Penn chapter house of the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity. Sources say the alleged rapist is another Penn student, but not a member of the fraternity.

Many of us struggle with a little bit of extra weight. OK, maybe a lot of extra weight. Because we don't have the lofty courtesy of airbrushing at our disposal, if we want to drop those pounds, we have to take care of it on our own.

MyFoxPhilly.com is reporting that a Saint Joseph's University student is in stable condition at a Lankenau Hospital ICU, infected with meningitis. People identified as possibly at-risk because they have been in contact with the patient recently have been treated. This is on the heels of a story we mentioned in February regarding two University of Pennsylvania students who came down with the disease, and two occurrences so close together is worrying. This Phillyist is a graduate of Saint Joe's, and wishes the sick student all the best in his recovery.

Despite the flurry of playoff wins and losses and analysis pouring in this week, I have managed to keep a steady eye on one Inquirer feature: a Sunday poll that gauged what the "biggest event for Philadelphia fans" was this upcoming weekend. I gave the poll a few days to mature and, as of today at three p.m., these were the results:

    Frugal Fun Alert: Thursday

  • The University of Pennsylvania announced yesterday that it would spend $40 million to convert a 14-acre stretch of former U.S. Postal Service parking lots in West Philadelphia into Penn Park. The park would consist of open space, four athletic fields, a dozen tennis courts, and other features. Combined with existing athletic fields, the park will total 24 acres, officials said.

  • A pick-up truck smashed into the front of a house in Rhawnhurst at 2:30 a.m. this morning. As the truck was speeding away, the Shehata family was left to see rubble all over their living room. "I thought it was an airplane, and all of a sudden I found the front of the house all the way inside," said the father, Rizk, a dentist.

  • Marueen Garrity confirmed last night that Foxwoods is considering moving its planned slots parlor from one end of Market East to the other. The gaming company is looking at empty floors in the Strawbridge & Clothier store at Eighth and Market Streets.
  • Yo, Philly in the News

  • Philadelphia Newspapers LLC filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection yesterday. The parent company of The Inquirer, the Philadelphia Daily News and Philly.com is mired in $390 million in debt.

  • Two University of Pennsylvania undergraduates were hospitalized with meningitis yesterday. One student is listed as stable and the other is in critical condition. Anybody who had been in close contact with the students were identified before an announcement was made.
  • Frugal Fun Alert: Wednesday

Fun around town, for $10 or less:

Drexel (2-3, 0-1): Drexel hasn't really given us much to get excited about over the last couple weeks. After getting past Cal State-Northridge in the battle of mediocrity, the Dragons pushed George Mason to the brink, but ended up falling to the Patriots by a point. Maybe because of a hangover from the George Mason game, Drexel was pretty lackluster in a loss to Fairfield. Can the team pull it back together? They've got a tough test on Thursday, hosting a 6-2 Niagra team (tickets) before going on the road to play Bucknell. And when they're done with that, they've got to travel to #17 Memphis. Realistically, the Dragons will probably be 2-6 or 3-5 after this stretch, so we'll be paying more attention to how they look in these games, particularly the Niagra game.

Drexel (1-1, 0-0): The Dragons got off to as good of a start, realistically, as we could hope for. They pulled out a close victory against Penn, but it wasn't for lack of trying to cough it up at the end. Fortunately for Drexel, Penn's Zack Rosen missed a key free throw in the closing moments of the game that could have possibly sent the game to overtime. In their next game, however, Drexel couldn't get anything going offensively, and ended up on the wrong end of a blowout against Georgetown. Upcoming games: Home vs. Cal State Northridge, Mon., 12/1/08, 7:00 p.m. (tickets).

With college hoops season tipping off, we're going to pick up where we left off last year with the Home Game: College Hoops Edition series of posts, with some modifications. We're going to stick to the Big 5 schools plus Drexel this year, and we're going to keep it to men's basketball—not because we have anything against women's hoops, but because our brains can only handle so much at any one time. So with the season getting underway, what's the outlook for Philadelphia's teams? Here's what we think.

HOW MUCH: $15. Get 'em here.

  • John McCain, Barack Obama, and Sarah Palin will all be campaigning in Pennsylvania today. It's all part of a last push for votes. Meanwhile, the Inquirer has coverage of local races.
  • The Fumo trial is already getting a little nasty, with the defense essentially accusing the prosecution of racism in its jury selection. (We also enjoy the headline of that article, because we misread it as "Fumo-in-law.")
  • We told you to hurry, but because many of you may not have been able to make it to Penn on time, here's XPN's video coverage of The Kooks busking at the university.

If you're picking up a copy of Inquirer columnist Faye Flam's first book, The Score (subtitled "How the Quest for Sex Has Shaped the Modern Man") looking for a titillating chronicle of men's sex lives, look elsewhere. Likewise, if you're looking for groundbreaking scientific research explaining why, for instance, guys like porn, you've picked up the wrong book. Flam is a journalist, pure and simple, so she's neither trying to arouse nor to astound. What she is doing—what she does quite well—is reporting, educating, and informing.
