Today's featured Twitter user is @Drew. Known in meatspace as Drew Olanoff, he is a Philly blogger engaged in his own fight against cancer. He was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma in May 2009. In an effort to put the disease in its place, he started the #blamedrewscancer hashtag on Twitter, which has since gone viral and turned into a powerful movement.

Today's featured Twitter user is @bitsandwatts. They're a unique, local outfit that essentially aggregates upcoming concert information for the Philly metro area and provides easy access to a few song samples from each artist. They use their Twitter account to keep in touch with users, supplement the event listings on their site, and discuss music with other Twitter users. Although it's part Upcoming.org, part MySpace Music, and part Hype Machine, Bits & Watts is more powerful than the sum of those and similar services. They rock an in-line music player, on-click, same-page listening, and a linear, easy-to-follow listing style that makes it easy to see who's coming and when, and find out if you're interested. From there you can buy tickets, map the venue, and access artist websites. We're always excited to see homegrown projects like Bits & Watts take off, so check them out!

State budget crises have put the libraries in the cross-hairs of cost-cutting efforts, potentially cutting off those most in need of their services. That's quite a feat in a blog-crazy city like Philadelphia. He is counting down his top 9 posts from his 9th year here and mentioning each one over at his Twitter account. Congratulations Peter, and keep those posts coming!

Today's featured Twitter user is @southphillykids. They have only been around for about a week, but they seem active and have great intentions. As their name suggests, they plan to keep South Philly and Passyunk Square families in the know about great opportunities for their kids to have some homegrown fun. They're serious, too—they even have a Facebook group about it.

Today's featured Twitter user is @philaTA. The Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia. They were on hand yesterday at a rally in Media, PA regarding the budget woes that have led Pennsylvania lawmakers to cut all state funding for arts and culture. Follow them to stay current on the ongoing push to restore funding to PA's arts communities.

Today's featured Twitter user is @JUVLAW75, the Juvenile Law Center. According to their web site, the Juvenile Law Center advocates for the "rights and well-being of children in jeopardy." Based in Center City, they use their Twitter account to keep their followers posted on both local and national legal developments relevant to the rights and safety of children.

Today's featured Twitter user is @VisitPhilly, a production of the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation. Their goal? Bring people to Philadelphia. By now, you have probably seen their unique With Love ad campaign, featuring hand-written notes about all the many reasons one may have for visiting Philly. We're still waiting for something like "Dear Lovers of Local Color: You'll love the local news and culture coverage on Phillyist.com" to show up on a bus shelter or a billboard, but we're hopeful.

Today's featured Twitter user is @RedCrossPhilly. The Red Cross of Philadelphia is a part of the Southeastern Pennsylvania chapter of the Red Cross. They use their Twitter account to keep their followers informed about how they are trying to accomplish their mission in Philadelphia. It seems to consist primarily of assisting victims of house fires. Actually, their updates seem ripe for a mashup with Google Maps as a way to plot fire locations in Philadelphia.

We're going to start featuring a Pennsylvania- or Philadelphia-based entity with each Twitterist post, giving you a chance to meet homegrown organizations that are reaching out to their audience, market, or constituents via Twitter. Think of it as a way to showcase the ways that our community participates in the broader social conversation. Our first featured user is @ReliableEnergy. Pennsylvanians for Reliable Energy is an advocacy group that aims to ease the burden of energy costs in the state through modernization, efficiency, and renewable energy. They use their Twitter account to keep their followers in the know regarding policy changes and relevant news, like the $40 million in stimulus money our state will get for energy improvements.

Twitter is in the news recently, as we mentioned in today's Whiz, playing a part on the international stage. Meanwhile, we're keeping it local, trying to find interesting users and their tweets.

Here comes the Twitter action, folks. In case you don't know, the residents of the statusphere have collectively decided that Friday is a good day to start following people you haven't found yet. Hence, the birth of the thriving "follow Friday" meme. Take a moment today to share your favorite users with other Twitterists. Think of it as a way of thanking people who enrich your Twitter experience. You know, people like us.

We spend a lot of time on Twitter, doing our best to deliver a good mix of our headlines and real-time updates. And, in case you're not following us yet, or aren't on Twitter at all, you should know that ours is a very Twitter-friendly city.That's why we've decided to start a daily post lining up some of the more interesting tweets that fellow Phillyists have pushed out into the statusphere. In most cases, we leave the details to the original tweets, so click through, read, and follow your fellow Philadelphians.
