But whatever you plan to purchase, definitely do it soon before screenings start to sell out. It happens faster than you might think!

Here's the ticketing information for the Philadelphia Film Festival/CineFest, via the festival's Twitter account, @PhillyCinefest. The prices and options are all very similar to those of past festivals.

Billy Joel and Elton John "Face 2 Face" With Philly in July

Valentine's Day came and went. Roses were bought and hearts were filled and, probably, some were broken. Cupid choked a little on the rough city air and kept right on flying, gone for another year. Trash cans filled with empty cardboard hearts, once full of chocolate, now bereft of their rich and sumptuous treats.

The last time we wrote about The Sea and Cake coming through town was June of last year. Since then, the band that's named after a misinterpretation of a title of a song by a band that's even more obscure have put together a new album called Car Alarm. We were slightly disturbed to find the album has more than Sea and Cake's traditional ten tracks, but thankfully nothing else about it is much of a departure from their previous work. It's still good old, reliable, mellow, catchy indie rock. Our favorite tracks are "Aerial," "On a Letter," and "Weekend." You can get a free download of "Aerial," as well as a number of other great Sea and Cake tracks, if you head over to the R5 Productions website and scroll down to the section about the show. Oh yeah, there's a show! Sea and Cake will be playing the First Unitarian Church with Death Vessel this Friday night. Check it out.

What is it about bands with variations of the word "fuck" in their names? First we fell in love with The Fucking Champs, then Holy Fuck, and now Fucked Up. Fucked Up is a hardcore punk band from Toronto, and their latest full-length release, The Chemistry of Common Life, quite simply rocks. The title track is probably our favorite, but pretty much all the songs on there are full of the kind of brutal beats, angry lyrics, exciting music, and crazy screaming that we love. You can catch Fucked Up at the Barbary with Vivian Girls and Philly locals Amateur Party this Saturday. Don't miss it.

It may seem kind of weird, but Girl Talk is a guy. A guy from Pittsburgh named Gregg Gillis. You can download his latest album, Feed the Animals, via a "pay what you want" plan on Illegal Art, or wait until October 21st and go to a store to pick up a hard copy. But we suggest you click on over and slap a little virtual money down for it right now, because it's pretty darn good. Sure, the concept is simple enough: a bunch of familiar music from the last couple of decades, mixed together to create insane new dance tracks. But Gillis does it mighty artfully, with a real ear for weird connections and powerful beats, and it's quite pleasant recognizing familiar bits of songs mixed up in unexpected and exciting new ways. Girl Talk's taking his lap top to a sold-out show tomorrow night at the Starlight Ballroom, with Hearts of Darknesses and Grand Buffet. It'll be the kick-off of a nationwide tour for Feed the Animals, and it promises to be a crazy dance party of epic proportions, so here's hoping you already have your tickets so you can check it out.

Well, it's not. It's a Welsh band! Future of the Left (MySpace) is known as an alt-rock supergroup, due to the fact that it is made up of former members of other alt-rock bands (Mclusky and Jarcrew). Supergroups aren't always so super, but we're pretty impressed with Future's debut album, Curses! It's got a fun, punk-like sound, with clever, funny lyrics and great beats. Sometimes they sound like Shellac, but they don't get nearly as repetitive. We particularly like "Fingers Become Thumbs!", "Kept by Bees," and "Small Bones Small Bodies." So check out the band when Y-Rock welcomes them to the Electric Factory tomorrow night, along with Against Me! and Ted Leo & The Pharmacists.

I've got to admit, when I go looking for some good music to listen to, I rarely consider instrumental music. It's not that I don't like jazz, classical, or instrumental rock; in fact, I'd list certain jazz albums among the best records of all time. It's just that I really prefer some words with my songs. It probably has something to do with my general obsession with words. Anyway, I point this out by way of explaining why Mogwai isn't my usual cup of tea. The Scottish post-rock band's latest album, The Hawk Is Howling (which gets its official release on Monday), has no lyrics whatsoever—although it does have some pretty interesting track titles, like "I'm Jim Morrison, I'm Dead," "I Love You, I'm Going to Blow Up Your School" (one of the best tracks on the disc, along with "Batcat"), and "Thank You Space Expert." Still, it does have lots of guitars roaring away, and some really fantastic music, so I'm going to go ahead and recommend you see Mogwai when they play the Starlight Ballroom tonight with experimental group Fuck Buttons. We're betting they're even better live than they are recorded. But if you'd like some recordings first, just to whet your appetite, swing on over to R5 Productions (who are presenting the show) to download some samples.

It's fair to say that Built to Spill is one of my favorite bands of all time. Their music is eerie and layered; their lyrics clever, funny, and evocative; and their many guitars create a massive wall of sound that can totally knock your socks off. Their early work, on discs like The Normal Years and There's Nothing Wrong with Love, is dirty and fun, but things took a turn for the complex with the release of their first major label album, Perfect From Now On, in 1997. The songs on this disc are longer, with more of an epic, prog rock feel to them (yes, that's a compliment), and the sound in general seems more polished, deliberate, and carefully thought-out. A particular favorite of mine is the album-opener, "Randy Described Eternity," which does indeed, as the title suggests, consist of a rather awesome (in both the classic and modern senses) description of eternity. "Stop the Show," with its amazing and lengthy instrumental intro, is another kick-ass track. But really all the tracks are pretty fantastic.
