Playlist Rewind: New Found Glory

The Trocadero is the kind of venue that has something for everyone: all ages are welcome downstairs, and those of us who like to enjoy a brew with our rock can congregate upstairs. This dynamic was especially interesting on Saturday night, when we caught New Found Glory touring in support of their most recent effort, Not Without a Fight (Amazon).

Every once in awhile, you hear a song that grabs your attention from the opening chord and holds it for a solid three or four minutes. A few weeks ago, I was working, with my XM radio online supplying my requisite background noise, when I had that experience. A song stopped me in my tracks, mid-sentence of what I was writing. And when it was over, it was a reaffirmation (one that I need every now and then) that there is some really good rock music out there that unfortunately finds itself labeled as "emo."

Generally, we don't listen to the Jimmy Buffett or The Beach Boys in January. We don't listen to the Charlie Brown Christmas album in the summer. (Although, Eric Hutchinson would probably disagree with us.) And normally, we don't really listen to Type O Negative (MySpace) except for roughly a month before and after Halloween. We've seen them twice before on Halloween night, or the night before Halloween, and we believe that time of the year fits their music perfectly. But we also thoroughly believe that rigid adherence to most rules is unhealthy, so we're willing to bend a bit if the right opportunity presents itself.

We confess, we have a bit of a thing for young women with pianos. You already know about the torrid affair we'd like to have with Alison Sudol, aka A Fine Frenzy, and we're also quite enamored with Sara Bareilles. Not to be forgotten in the mix of kick-ass piano women right now is Kate Nash (MySpace), whose debut album, , is regularly playing on our iPod. When describing Nash's music, it's tough not to make a Lily Allen comparison, but that's not entirely accurate. Even though Nash's lyrics contain a certain degree of bitterness, and while she sings with a Cockney accent similar to Allen's, Nash's music isn't as consumed with the need to be "cool" by focusing entirely on getting laid and getting drunk. Don't get us wrong, we're all for getting drunk and getting laid, but when it's all the music is about, you're trying just a bit too hard. Nash's music doesn't have that problem. So we're hoping Nash won't have the additional problem of sucking in her live performance.

Every Tuesday and Thursday, we'll be posting events that are going on sale during the current week. This Thursday post only collects the latest announcements, so definitely check the Tuesday post for any you may have missed.

) has such a big under-age following that The Troc, whose balcony we always count on as a place of over-21 refuge, opened the upstairs to all of the teenagers who deigned to go up. I have a feeling that if I die and go to hell, it will be something like that.

We're kicking off a new regular feature today, and here it is! "Can't Miss This!" should be going up every weekday for the foreseeable future and, as you may have already guessed, it'll feature a handful of events going on that day in and around the city that we think are so cool you should make sure not to miss them. Hope you enjoy it!

Tomorrow night, One Republic is playing The Trocadero. We've never heard of them, and outside of the song that automatically pops up on their MySpace page, we have no idea what their music sounds like.

Last year's For the Love of Pig Iron benefit show, "PIG FEAT!" was one of the best performances we saw all year. This one-night-only variety show featured drag acts, dancing, music, and the most spirited, competitive, live auction we've ever seen. We knew we'd be back in 2008.

Let's see if we can keep this straight. John Nolan left Taking Back Sunday to form Straylight Run (MySpace), for which he eventually recruited drummer Will Noon after the band Noon was in, Breaking Pangea, split up. The lead singer of Breaking Pangea had been Coatesville native Fred Mascherino, who then went on to replace Nolan in Taking Back Sunday. While still in Breaking Pangea, Mascherino began work on his own project, The Color Fred...

Friday night marked my third time seeing The New Pornographers, and as I've come to expect, they totally rocked the house. After a fantastic set by Immaculate Machine and a really solid set by Emma Pollock (whose album, , has been on pretty frequent rotation on my work computer), they took the stage, ready to perform to a sold-out crowd at The Trocadero.

Warped Tour is the gift that keeps on giving, at least for this Phillyist. We got to hear some great bands there, and we're going to continue following some of them. One of those bands is Monty Are I. Monty rocked our socks off at Warped, and they'll be back tomorrow night at the Trocadero with Sum 41, Amber Pacific and Schoolyard Heroes. Monty's latest album, , is starting to pick up some buzz, thanks largely to the single "Between the Sheets," which you should be listening to right now. If you're not, hit play on the video above and check it out. So we love the song, and we think the whole album is pretty good, if a bit over-produced. We actually wish it didn't sound quite so clean. Monty won us over at Warped with a really raw, aggressive sound, and we're looking forward to more of that tomorrow night.

Lucky for you, rockers, Sea Wolf is making a stop in the Illadelph-I-A. Don’t confuse this Sea Wolf with the Jack London novel. Believe me. The call of the wild (Pun alert! Pun alert!) Sea Wolf will be pouring out of the Trocadero on Monday evening. Alex Church, the multi-instrumentalist solely responsible for Sea Wolf, is going to bang your head like a gong and satiate your need for some silver sun (the Pickup variety).

Stereotype dictates that "the gays" are good at all things artistic or cultural. Tomorrow night's Beyond Beyond! at the Trocadero won't do anything to distill that notion.

When we first heard Of Montreal, the song was "Mr. Edminton" and the effect was immediate. We fell for this band because the absurd lyrics and frantic half-pop, half-I-don't-know-what music sounds new, and that's a rare thing in music these days. Like a less trustworthy Beatles narrative, their songs swing violently from the simple, low-fi musings we have come to know and love from so many Elephant 6 bands, to densely produced and dangerously complex explosions.
