Phillyist Playlist: Stevie Wonder at The Borgata

Sitting here thinking of what to write for this preview, there are a million things to say and all are completely inadequate words to use. To say Stevie Wonder has been a personal influence is one thing, but to know that he has influenced the greatest modern musicians of our time is so far-reaching and amazing that it almost defies superlatives. This Phillyist danced her first dance with her husband to Stevie's "You and I" and with her father to "Isn't She Lovely." Stevie Wonder has been a part of people's lives since the early 1960s and continues to perform with the same enthusiasm and infectious optimism since then. His new DVD, Live At Last showcases perfectly the versatility, both vocally and instrumentally, of this musical genius. You can catch Stevie performing his Wonder Autumn's Night tour when it stops for two days at The Borgata this Friday and Saturday.

Summer festivals are upon us. Many festivals. Kind of watered down, no? So it’s time to take a look at the beasts of the east: All Points West, and Download Festival. OK, no, The Download Festival is nowhere near the project All Points West is. I mean, Radiohead, Underworld, The Roots, Girl Talk, and Animal Collective could all take the cake as a headliner, and you would have a great time.

You know those days where it seems that there are like four good bands playing on one night? And they’re all really good? Saturday, June 7, is that day. Personally, this brings to mind one of the few concepts that I learned in my macroeconomics class – opportunity cost. Even if you go to one of these shows and plan your day carefully, you can’t see it all!

There's so much going on across the Ist-a-Verse that it's almost impossible to keep track these days. Fortunately, we do it so you don't have to!

Haven't heard of it? From the same form of racial profiling that results in people getting pulled over for Driving While Black, basically, if you're black and travelling by plane, the odds of having your luggage (or self) searched are significantly higher than the odds white travellers operate with. In 1999, Mos Def rapped about it on his album :

Last night, Ropeadope Digital celebrated its launch at the World Cafe Live. The evening was made up of performances by BurnDown All Stars, Electric City, and Aunt Jessica. And a duo of painters who kinda hung out in the corner of the stage for most of the evening with some canvas. I didn't quite get it, but, nonetheless, there were painters in the corner. Yeah.

Every Tuesday and Thursday, we'll be posting events that are going on sale during the current week. This Tuesday post only collects the early announcements, so definitely check back on Thursday for the latest ticket news.

While everyone else was writing about this yesterday, I was too busy working [read: getting a tattoo of Barbaro on my shoulder while listening to Bad Brains].

Most of the time, these columns are intended to just remind you to be better, more polite people. Sometimes, we're downright Twenty-First Century or liberated and progressive. Once in a while, though, we get a little old-fashioned.

The Roots brought down the house at the Kimmel Center on Friday night, bringing a rather stagnant crowd to its feet for a two-and-a-half hour set that spanned the entire Roots discography.

Will Smith probably earns the title of "Most Popular Philadelphian Recording Artist." But when it comes to the title of "Most Popular Philadelphia Recording Artist We're Proud To Admit Is Our Own," well, The Roots own that title. Tonight, The Roots bring their amazing live show to the beautiful Kimmel Center, in a night that promises to be a great fish out of water experience. You know, sort of like Splash but with a concert and without Tom Hanks.

By now you’ve probably heard of Nouvelle Vague, the French band covering songs of the English new wave in the loungey style of Brazilian bossanova. They’re on the stereo at your hipster friends’ parties, they’re showing up on every list as one of the best breakout albums of the summer, and most recently, they’re on the soundtrack for a T-Mobile commercial. And now the band is bound for World Café Live, the Philadelphia stop on their American tour.

Fat Joe is coming to Philadelphia to play a free concert. If you're a fan, we're sure you're excited. We're excited over anything that's free. But we're not going to tell you when or where this free concert is.
