Playlist Rewind: The Color Fred at The Barbary

We were obviously psyched to see friend-of-Phillyist The Color Fred perform at The Barbary last week. After all, Fred would be doing a solo acoustic set, and he'd told us when we talked to him that he writes all of his songs on acoustic—so it was an opportunity to see him do his songs live in their original form, so to speak. But as we got ready for the show, we couldn't help but feel that something was a little bit off—the fact that it was an all-ages concert in a Fishtown dive, and it started at 6 p.m. It was just an odd location and format. But hey, that's where Fred would be, so away we went.

Phillyist Interviews... Fred Mascherino (a/k/a The Color Fred)

How could Phillyist not love Fred Mascherino, perhaps better known by the name of his current project, The Color Fred? The 34-year-old local—a Temple alum raised in Coatesville, lest you question his local 'cred'—gained local notoriety with Breaking Pangaea and a national following from his work with Taking Back Sunday. So it's not surprising that we've covered Fred before, and we'll continue covering him when we get the chance.

Let's see if we can keep this straight. John Nolan left Taking Back Sunday to form Straylight Run (MySpace), for which he eventually recruited drummer Will Noon after the band Noon was in, Breaking Pangea, split up. The lead singer of Breaking Pangea had been Coatesville native Fred Mascherino, who then went on to replace Nolan in Taking Back Sunday. While still in Breaking Pangea, Mascherino began work on his own project, The Color Fred...

good.)

In the last few weeks, the Eagles have looked absolutely anemic against the Giants, snatched defeat from the jaws of victory against da' Bears, and unimpressively beaten a couple hopeless teams in the Jets and the Vikings by a mere touchdown apiece. So forgive me for not being that optimistic about Sunday night's game against the Cowboys. Sure, our defense has been fairly solid... if we forget that last 1:57 of the Bears game, where we managed to make Brian Griese look like Jon Elway. But the Cowboys are the best offense not wearing New England Patriots uniforms that we'll see this year. I've resigned myself to getting beaten, probably badly, by our arch-rivals. So much so, in fact, that I won't be watching Sunday night's game. Instead, I'll be spending Sunday night with another rival: Paper Rival.
