Phillyist's Guide to the Good Stuff

Recently we received a request from an out of town reader for our non-touristy recommendations for the best local spots. More specifically our favorites in Food, Galleries, Booze, Books, Clothes, Music, "Women" (back to this later) and "Any other cool shit that you think people who are into eating, drinking, art, reading, music, etc. would like to see." Well, we like to appease so we'll give it a shot. Oh, and dear reader, we're not a hipster either, so if you accidentally wander into hipster territory based on our solid normal person advice, sorry. It can't be helped. It's Philly. They're everywhere.

When Zombie-Time comes, don't try to steal water from these folks.

All seasons have their harbingers, but spring's seem to be the prettiest, especially in the D.C.-to-Boston corridor that we're strategically placed in. What makes springtime so lovely in these parts, you might ask? Well it's certainly not the weather we've been having of late. We were thinking more along the lines of the annual appearance of fluffy pink and white cherry blossoms on trees throughout Fairmount Park, commemorated annually with the Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival of Greater Philadelphia. The 2008 Festival, coordinated by the Japan American Society of Greater Philadelphia, kicks off tomorrow and goes for two full weeks of springtimey, culturally enriching goodness. We've had a chance to talk to some of the folks at the JASGP, who highlighted a couple of can't miss events:

I may have slammed the sushi at Reading Terminal Market, but RTM is actually just about my favorite place to grab lunch in Center City. The possibilities are endless: last week, Ross and I had some pretty yummy crepes at Profi's Creperie; yesterday, we split a tasty panini at Mezze. You can't go wrong with the sandwiches at DiNic's or Salumeria, and once in a while, the daily special at 12th Street Cantina makes me feel like home.

(Even despite the sushi.)

That is not a hyperbole.

I try, on the whole, to steer Monday Manners away from conventional, old-fashioned etiquette lessons. Sure, I've tackled opening doors, paying for dates, standing for the ladies, things not to talk about in "polite" company, and appropriate sidewalk behavior for ladies and gents, but for the most part, I tend to keep away from the "which fork do I use when?" etiquette lessons that you'd expect of a traditional manners column. (I like to mix things up. A lot.)

No this isn't an ode to the Rolling Stones (though we do hear the bass line from that song in our head when we're walking down Market Street in the summertime). This is an ode to our love, Philadelphia. We are counting the hours until we get back to your edgy goodness. Unlike our other trips to Vegas, this one sucks. Perhaps it is because we are travelling alone and aren't in the mood to...

Can non-foodies write foodie reviews? We are not a foodie, but if there's one thing about us, we love to eat. So this is less a review and more a puddle of drool translated into words.

. Then they did everything in their power to stop me from throwing things at the screen.

Today marks the third day of Restaurant Week, and last night, three Phillyists headed over to Astral Plane for dinner. None of us had been there before, despite innumerable recommendations from assorted friends, but we fell in love with the place the moment we sat down. The food would have had to be terrible for us to change our minds. (Fortunately, it wasn't. More of that after the following digression...)

I've become friendly with local photographer JJ Tiziou since interviewing him in October. We've had sushi, we've gone to shows, and we've kept in touch, privately or through mass mailings, about all of the crazy field trips he's been on or planning lately.

Christmas is a week from today. Which means, depending on whether you count today, you've got either six or seven days left to shop. Good thing, too—I know that I, for one, need all the time I can get.

Phillyist loves sushi. So much, in fact, that we end up eating it at least twice a week. It's not great for our bank account. We just think of it as getting our fill now, because someday we're going to want kids and that will be nine months plus nursing time, times however many babies end up happening, that we'll be missing out on our sushi consumption.

...Because that about sums it up for us.

So maybe a week of rain isn't the best time to ask you about your favorite place to stand outside and wait for food. But Phillyist wants to know: what's your favorite food truck in the city?

About a month ago, Phillyist was reading star Mariska Hargitay was interviewed about her pregnancy and said two things she looked forward to about not being pregnant were the ability to take hot baths and eat sushi (probably not simultaneously). Now, we didn't know about the bath thing, but we looked it up and discovered that water over ninety-eight degrees is unfavorable to the pregnancy. But the fish thing: well, we'd heard a lot about this over the years and decided that as responsible food bloggers, we'd get you the facts.

Better order your Braverman's cakes while you can, because come January 31 Braverman's and five other Reading Terminal Market merchants are out on their collective butts: their leases are not being renewed.
