Yesterday morning, 20-year-old Community College of Philadelphia accounting student Fakhur Uddin was bound with duct tape and string, shot in the head, and left in the back room of the East Germantown gift and sundry store he was minding for his ailing father. Police believe he was killed during a robbery. Apparently one of the key witnesses against Vincent Fumo in his corruption trial will be his own son-in-law. In the hopes of keeping......

Proofreading Philly tries to capture typos, wordos, and all other kinds of grammatical mistakes that we see around the city. But we need your help! Email photos to us from your computer or your phone, and show the city that you care about good grammar. Chris Illuminati of phillyburbs.com found this sign at a Taco Bell in the suburbs (where else?) and writes: "Not sure if this was an informative Post-it note about the soda......

This is just one of those stories that you simply can't make up. According to an NBC 10 article, a Lansdale couple is under investigation for (and have openly admitted to perpetrating) an "18-month egging spree." Seeking revenge on unnamed friends for unnamed damages inflicted upon them, the man and his girlfriend spent over a year slinging non-viable chicken embryos at more than 400 homes, allegedly causing over $7,000 in damage. According to the national......

Hi there, Wawa: So listen. Last week, I was at the corner of 20th and Chestnut and there was a Wawa there. Today, I was at the corner of 20th and Chestnut and there was an Old Nelson there. Now don't get me wrong. I love me some Old Nelson sandwiches. In fact, I'd venture to say that, as a rule, their sandwiches are better than yours. But, like your advertisements say, sometimes you've......

The latest in the case of Ebony Nicole Dorsey, the 14-year-old girl allegedly killed by her mother's boyfriend: the Daily News has an exclusive interview with the girl's mother, Danielle Cattie, who calls her boyfriend a monster. Meanwhile, the Inquirer quotes Cattie's brother defending his sister; he says she's "a great mom who deeply loves her children," and "She's a good person who made some bad decisions. She's paid a horrible price." It may seem......

The Inquirer takes a closer look at the Philadelphia policeman who was shot the day before the shooting of Chuck Cassidy, by a gunman who then fled and ultimately drowned in the Schuylkill. They also put the incident in the larger context of criminals in Philadelphia getting released from jail only to commit more crimes and be arrested again, over and over. Meanwhile, another Philadelphia police officer was injured this weekend, this time by......

Local student Dan Magro wears many hats. He is (as mentioned) a student, at the University of the Arts. He is a Starbucks employee in Southampton. He is a writer/filmmaker. And tonight, he will add to that hat-list "philanthropist." Magro's movie, Portraits of Sari, premieres tonight at Gershman Hall (corner of Broad and Pine), but you'll be getting more than just a movie with your attendance. It turns out that the lead actor in Portraits,......

What's new and/or interesting in Philly theaters this weekend. I Want Someone to Eat Cheese With - Jeff Garlin plays a rather pathetic Chicago actor who lives with his mother, and who, in the opening scenes of the film, gets dumped by his girlfriend, loses a part to Aaron Carter, and leaves an Overeaters Anonymous meeting to go to an ice cream parlor. When he falls for a girl there (Sarah Silverman), it could mean......

We received some interesting top ten lists from Match.com, as a sort of response to Forbes' annual list of top cities for singles. Philly ranked on every one of them. Amongst "Cities where you will find singles hitting the gym," we took ninth place. On the "Cities committed to healthy diets" list we were at 52%, making us number eight. We hit number nine again on "Top cities for vegetarian lovers," and we just......

While SFist cringed at the fatal dose of crime littering the Bay Area, it found solace in Hillary Clinton's San Francisco campaign headquarters opening, which featured loads of exposed mammary glands. In other news, SF Taxi Commission ruled that Satan's cab must keep its (in)famous medallion number, 666; and in an un-fashion-forward frenzy, San Francisco Fashion Week (chortle) bars bloggers from covering and getting smashed at their shows and parties, respectively. Also, they found a......

Banner week for SFist as the site's new editor introduced himself -- hooray for Brock! While the NY Times weighed in on SF's mayoral race, only SFist had the (insert tongue firmly into cheek) hard-hitting latest on candidate/activist Josh Wolf. Coverage of a protest vs. gentrification spawned a fantastic debate amongst SFist's readers. Finally, from the sublime to the ridiculous: video of a man that confused a Board of Supes meeting with "open mic......

We're just going to get right to the point this week. The Colonial Theatre in Phoenixville is hosting its annual showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show this Saturday at 10 PM. Tickets are on sale now, so get your fishnets and your best bustier ready to do the time warp. Again. As if that were not enough to convince you that the Colonial is a national treasure, consider this: they're also hosting a screening......

It's drawing close to the day when all Phillyists must decide what to do with a day off in the sweltering heat - the Fourth of July. Do we hang around the city, deal with the onslaught of tourists dressed up in their red, white and blue best to sit on the parkway and listen to Hall and Oates? Do we sit around drinking beer and grilling burgers and dogs? Do we venture into the......

It's all Fumo, all the time! Fumo might lose his defense counsel! Fumo might sell his house to pay for his defense! Fumo is still an important figure in local politics! Fumo, Fumo, Fumo! Speaking of "fumo," no fumo in PA! Well, sort of. The state senate passed a statewide ban on smoking yesterday, which would theoretically replace Philly's own smoking ban if it were to get signed into law, even though it has so......

Films: The King of Kong Future Screenings: None Well, last night was it for me. I saw my 20th and final film of the festival, and tonight it'll be time for me to take a break and catch up on some much-needed sleep! We don't know about where you are, but it seems like spring can't decide whether or not to happen. Some days are warm, some days are cold, and sometimes you aren't sure which. Baseball may have started up (and soccer/football winding down) but it still seems cold out there. Unless it's not. Anyways, onto the -ists. This suburban Phillyist used to work in the city, and commuted daily into Center City via SEPTA from Paoli. Imagine our surprise one day when, blearily staring out the window as the suburban landscape rushed by, we saw a tiny cemetery and historical marker mere feet away from the train tracks. Not quite convinced that we'd hallucinated the stone fence-enclosed minuscule graveyard, we made it our mission over the next few weeks to figure out......

You know what's the most fun thing about living in the suburbs after an ice storm? Shoveling. No, really, we swear. It's all the exercise you could possibly need, and after you come in, there's always a warm pot of soup and some hot chocolate waiting for you. I mean, what's not to love about shoveling two inches of solid ice and snapping a pair of shovels doing it? So, Fun In the Suburbs......

When we headed into the city from the depths of the wild Philadelphia suburbs, we were practically giddy with anticipation at being offered the chance to see Yo La Tengo, one of our favorite bands, live at the Trocadero. That euphoria lasted about fifteen minutes after we entered the Troc. Look, we realize it's wintertime, and people take up more room when they're wearing their bulky winter coats, and we realize that it was......

Oh no! Fumo's attorney, Richard Sprague, just played the old "the charges are politically motivated" card. Meanwhile, the loose accounting and auditing practices that allegedly led to Fumo being able to allegedly get away with what he allegedly got away with (you know, allegedly) are going to be tightened up, according to the President Pro Tempore of the state Senate. Holy crud! The bill banning trans fats in Philly eateries (pre-packaged foods are excepted, so......

Just over nine and a half hours, five home-city teams, and three games made for one crazy Saturday of men’s college basketball in Philadelphia. It is not often that hoops diehards get an opportunity to attend a trio of games in one day, but December 2, 2006 brought just that. Unfortunately, I was only able to go to the nightcap due to a massive amount of work and no access to a car. But in......

Like most of you, I'm sure, Phillyist has been gratified to see Sen. Rick Santorum make the long, occasionally hilarious journey to the private sector. Bob Casey has led in the polls since the race began, the national GOP is already planning on a loss in Pennsylvania, and Santorum himself is pinning his last hopes on the critical WWE Smackdown contingent. Yeah, so that whole Curt Weldon scandal thing is kind of exploding, huh? The short version is that Republican PA Representative Weldon is being investigated by the FBI for possibly illegally using his position to help his daughter with her business. The FBI were trying to conduct the investigation secretly, but the press revealed what was going on, so they were forced to act. The timing is pretty convenient (or inconvenient, depending on how......

So, despite all the hoopla (evacucations, power loss, traffic headaches, etc.) yesterday, Center City did not blow-up. As of this writing, there doesn't seem to be a final official word on what caused the underground explosion, but from the accounts we've been reading, it seems to have been a PECO-related issue. So far, we've (thankfully) only seen one mention of a minor injury, and at least one person on the Philadelphia Live Journal group......

Saul Ravitch is suing the city and his bosses at the airport for a long list of stuff, including loss of income, damage to his career, "mental anguish, emotional distress, loss of self-esteem, embarrassment, humiliation, personal indignity, and loss of life's pleasures." Over the Hedge is a computer-animated family film from a large Hollywood studio (in this case, DreamWorks), so you know pretty much what to expect: a bunch of anthropomorphized animals voiced by a bevy of celebrities, spouting amusing jokes laced with pop culture references, who go through a series of wacky adventures that splits them apart, but then ultimately brings them back together again, closer friends than ever, and everybody learns a valuable lesson about......
