Phillyist Interviews... Neal Dandade

Neal Dandade is one of my heroes. Luckily for me, unlike most people's heroes, I know mine. Quite well, actually: Neal and I go back ten years and two thousand miles to Coronado High School in El Paso, Texas. We acted together then, and now I'm lucky to get onstage once a year, but Neal is doing it professionally, performing with a number of improvisational and sketch comedy groups in the Chicago area—including the career-launching Second City. As you'll see from his interview below, improv is a natural fit for Neal, who sometimes thinks so fast it's hard to keep up. ("He was always so bright," as Mamaist put it.) You may actually have seen some of his work: know those Boost Mobile commercials with the rapping George Washington? Neal actually originated the jingle (but hasn't, as of yet, been given any credit for his work).

Animosity Pierre, whose video we featured earlier today, is one step closer to becoming universal (if not "everybody"), having been featured today on Time's Entertainment blog. Score one for the home team! Now seriously, how are they [spoiler alert: highlight blank space] ?

Lost has absolutely nothing to do with Philadelphia. But Animosity Pierre does, and so we're posting this video for your enjoyment. Leave your theories about the Oceanic Six in the comments section. We'd love to see them!

Normally we could start this post with some quip about chasing off the winter doldrums with some laughter. But seeing as how the mercury is riding high today, and should be for a while, we got nothing. That’s why we’re not comedians. Luckily, there are some very talented folks who are, and they are presenting a 5-day smorgasbord of improv and sketch comedy goodness for your gluttonous consumption.

Philadelphia’s premiere sketch comedy troupe, The Waitstaff, will be performing at the World Café Live this Saturday evening. The Waitstaff has been performing locally for years, and has also garnered acclaim following a variety of national performance engagements. Most recently, The Waitstaff was one of fifty groups to compete in The Great Sketch Experiment, which was held at Duke University, and sponsored by JibJab.com.

Texas is thawing, the Northeast is freezing, and a sort of natural order seems almost restored to the Ist-A-Verse. Almost.

What's new and/or interesting in Philly theaters this weekend.

Does your heart long for the sea while waves make your innards shudder? Well, if you can stomach sketch comedy without the Dramamine, Comic Energy might have a cure for the winter blahs. Cruise to Nowhere is a landlocked evening of cruise ship-themed sketch comedy, chock full of TV parodies and promising "a life-like atmosphere of an authentic cruise to the Caribbean."

Phillyist knows there are all kinds of controversy brewing about the movie version of will be speaking about the film at the Central Library (1901 Vine Street) at 7PM on Thursday night. FREE!
