Fun around town, for $10 or less: Savoring the Salt: Scribe Video Center, Film at International House, and Temple University Press present “A Celebration of the Film Work of Toni Cade Bambara,” including a panel discussion and screening of The Bombing of Osage Avenue at the International House (3701 Chestnut), 7PM. $10 The Martha Graham Cracker Cabaret: Our favorite Martha brings her fabulous cabaret to L'Etage (634 S. 6th), on the 2nd floor of Creperie...
Tonight at 7, the International House will be showing the premiere of Precious Places, a documentary put together by Scribe Video Center's Precious Places Community History Project. That's a mouthful, but what it translates to is local folks from largely non-touristy areas of the city and some parts of Camden were given cameras and asked to record the goings-on of their community. There are interviews and looks at out-of-the way historical and cultural sites; Scribe says, "For the first time in Philadelphia history, the people in the neighborhoods are telling their own stories about vital neighborhood issues and the people and places that make their communities unique." That's a great idea, but maybe should be ammended to say "on film." Phillyist hasn't met many Philly-ites that are shy about telling you what's what. But what a great opportunity for a look into parts of the city that often get overlooked when someone thinks of "Philadelphia."

In honor of Phillyist's favorite holiday, we're delving into the darker side of Philadelphia's nightlife to spotlight Scaryoke at Ulana's (2nd and Bainbridge Streets). Part of "Despondent Heaven" (a weekly Goth-night featuring gothic, metal, industrial, punk, and new wave music party), Scaryoke is just what you'd imagine it is: Goth Karaoke (We guess not everyone likes to sing Petula Clark's greatest hits when crooning for strangers). Phillyist has heard good things about Scaryoke - and the second we manage to stay up late enough to attend (Despondent Heaven starts at 9PM, but Scaryoke doesn't get started 'till midnight) we're all about it. And we're pretty sure could be considered Goth, if you performed it right. Despondent Heaven is $3, and you must be 21 or older to get in.
Office drones looking to make a mid-day escape on their lunch-break may want to check out local radio station WXPN's (88.5) Free At Noon Concert Series each Friday (here's a surprise) . The performances take place downstairs at the World Cafe (3025 Walnut Street) and frugal friendly box lunches are available for purchase ($6 for Students and Members, $8 for Non-Members).
If Phillyist loves anything, it's Films that are Free. Therefore, it was with some sadness that we turned the calendar from muggy July to oppressive August, since the act indicated the free, outdoor summer movie showings were winding down. Lucky for us Scribe Video Center has got the late-summer outdoor movie hook-up.
