This past Saturday the first ever BarCamp Philly was held at the University of the Arts in Center City. If you are unfamiliar with the concept of BarCamp, it is a worldwide network of individually organized user generated conferences, with participating cities spanning the globe. The conference schedule is never prearranged—BarCamp attendees simply show up, and in a very low tech (but functional) organizational system, scribble their presentation topics on a grid of index cards set in certain time slots to create the day's agenda.

Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings almost burned down the TLA Friday night with one of the hottest shows I've seen there all year.

The saga of CBS 3 anchorwoman Alycia Lane has gotten even stranger. The Daily News reports that her first call upon release from NYPD custody was to Governor Edward Rendell. A spokesman for the governor,Chuck Ardo, said to the paper that she did it to "make sure he knew her side of the story because he is an opinion-maker and runs around in influential circles." And "I think she knew better than to ask him to intervene." Ardo also made it clear that the governor's office was not going intervene in the case.

Nothing puts me in the holiday spirit like Handel's Messiah. Despite the fact that much of Messiah's subject matter is better-suited for Easter, it has made itself a Christmas-time staple of choirs around the world. Because of its length (three hours), it's not too often that you hear Handel's Messiah in its entirety, much less on period instruments. Some argue that modern instruments fill Handel's texture out, but I find that they detract from the refined, yet passionate nature of Baroque music. Early music group Vox Amadeus' performance of Handel's unabridged Messiah on period instruments at Holy Trinity Church was therefore a rare treat.

A sad week for LAist as they lose their trusted and amazing editor Tony Pierce to the LA Times, but what a blast his last week was. He shared his 25 Favorite CDs of 2007 and wrote a great review of just a good movie, No Country For Old Men. At UCLA, thousands of students celebrated the end of their quarter by running around campus in their undies (lots of photos in a two-part photo essay, one, two). That wasn't the only photo essay either: Joss Whedon/Mutant Enemy friends and Star Trek actors all joined in at the Writers Strike and KROQ's Almost Acoustic Christmas brought two nights of amazing bands that included Avenged Sevenfold, Linkin Park (Part I), Modest Mouse, Muse, Spoon and The Killers (Part II). Not only is L.A. a great music town, it has just been named the best city for bookish types. For those who are looking for something a little more active, American Gladiators are back (yes!) and if that's not enough, how about a Christmas gift of action and adventure?

The saga of CBS 3’s Alycia Lane continues. She has been divorced twice, appeared on Dr. Phil, was romantically linked to WCBS anchor Chris Wragge, and of course infamously sent bikini photos to a married man. All of this seemed to make her one of the darlings of the New York Post’s Page Six column of late.

What's new and/or interesting on TV this week.

Phillyist's favorite birthday present this year was a pair of socks that had sock monkeys on them. We tried to engage our partner in a discussion of the possible philosophical implications of having socks with monkeys made of socks on them, but he didn't take the bait. In any event, one may say we are predisposed to sock monkeys, which is why we can't stop giggling with joy over Mew Gallery's upcoming Sock and Awe exhibit running this Saturday through January 25, featuring (you guessed it) art celebrating the monkey of the sock.
