The film industry is clearly running scared of Halloween and Major League Baseball. Don't waste your time at the movies—nothing good to see there anyway. Trick-or-Treating, costume parties, and Phillies games rule this weekend.

Mayors Nutter and Bloomberg are using the World Series (have we mentioned the Phillies are playing the Yankees?) as an opportunity to draw attention to community service. Unlike a cheesecake/cheesesteak bet, this friendly wager will have the losing mayor (whom we can only assume will be Bloomberg) visiting the winning mayor's city to work on a mural on a children's recreational center. Phillyist looks forward to Mayor Bloomberg's visit after the series.

Top 5 Reasons Why We Hate the Yankees

Unless you've been hiding under a rock, you're well aware the World Series is scheduled to start today. We're sort of skeptical this rain is ever going to stop, but while we're all waiting for that to happen check out our run-down of why the Yankees suck (and some reasons why the Phillies are better) below:

Today's featured Twitter user is @bikeambassadors. Brought to us by the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, they promote "accessible, safe and fun" biking in and around Philadelphia. Whether your pedals pump gas or turn wheels, they want you to be safe and smart on the roads of Philly. That means playing nice.

The reports that a suburban woman offered on Craigslist "creative" payment—possibly related to her being "buxom"—for any available World Series tickets. Police responded to the Craigslist ad and the woman has been arrested. We assume the police who found the ad were on the clock and conducting work-related Craigslist searches for sex-for-tickets posts. There is still no word on whether or not the game will be televised within view of her cell, but, if so, she will have to settle for trading cheese sandwiches for a closer seat.

Today's featured Twitter user is @Drew. Known in meatspace as Drew Olanoff, he is a Philly blogger engaged in his own fight against cancer. He was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma in May 2009. In an effort to put the disease in its place, he started the #blamedrewscancer hashtag on Twitter, which has since gone viral and turned into a powerful movement.

After two stupid early games, a snow-out, and a late, late game, Phillies fans can rejoice in a game we'll actually get to watch. Tonight's 6:07 p.m. start time still doesn't make a whole lot of sense (what's with the :07, anyway?), but it's a hell of a lot better than last night, anxiously trying to keep our eyes open at 2 a.m., watching to make sure Brad Lidge didn't blow the perilous 1-run lead the Phils gained in the top of the 9th after a hard-fought game.

  • Republican district attorney candidate Michael Untermeyer has come up with quite the election stunt: he has "had himself equipped with an electronic ankle bracelet to demonstrate how city taxpayers could save millions in prison costs by making more use of monitoring technology for nonviolent criminal defendants."
  • Today's featured Twitter user is @VisitPhilly, a production of the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation. Their goal? Bring people to Philadelphia. By now, you have probably seen their unique With Love ad campaign, featuring hand-written notes about all the many reasons one may have for visiting Philly. We're still waiting for something like "Dear Lovers of Local Color: You'll love the local news and culture coverage on Phillyist.com" to show up on a bus shelter or a billboard, but we're hopeful.

We're going to start featuring a Pennsylvania- or Philadelphia-based entity with each Twitterist post, giving you a chance to meet homegrown organizations that are reaching out to their audience, market, or constituents via Twitter. Think of it as a way to showcase the ways that our community participates in the broader social conversation. Our first featured user is @ReliableEnergy. Pennsylvanians for Reliable Energy is an advocacy group that aims to ease the burden of energy costs in the state through modernization, efficiency, and renewable energy. They use their Twitter account to keep their followers in the know regarding policy changes and relevant news, like the $40 million in stimulus money our state will get for energy improvements.

If the Phanatic has realized he would like to live as a she, we can support that decision fully. But whatever gender the Phanatic identifies as, it's highly inappropriate to flash the crowd.

It's a three-day weekend. Are you still at work? Is your mind home while your body hangs out in the office for a few more hours? No, you're probably working really hard, so you can enjoy the long weekend without a bunch of crap to come back to on Tuesday.

Phillyist doesn't seem to be the only outlet that misses Harry Kalas.

    Remembering Harry Kalas

Most of us have never known the Phillies without Harry Kalas. Now, as fun as baseball has always been, and will continue to be, watching these games will never quite be the same.

    We'll miss you...

As the Phils are preparing to take on the Nats at Washington's home opener this afternoon, it's been reported that Harry Kalas, the voice of the Phils, was found passed out in the press box. He's been taken to the GW Hospital. Not much more details have been announced, but we'll keep you updated as we hear them.

From all of us here at Phillyist, we hope you're doing okay Harry.

Update: Philly.com has now reported that Harry Kalas has died at the age of 73 in DC this afternoon.

What an incredible loss for the Phils and the fans today. Not that it matters, but the Phillies will continue with today's game afternoon game against the Nats, but their trip to the White House tomorrow will be suspended.
