During his meeting with members of City Council yesterday, Willie Brown said he regretted calling for the strike at 3 a.m. "I regret calling [the strike] the time I did," he said after the meeting. "But I don't regret the strike."
And in other SEPTA strike news, the union is apparently considering a "revised offer" from SEPTA. Might the strike end by the evening rush hour, and perhaps more importantly, does the "revised offer" give in to some of the union's demands, which will pretty much require commuters to open up our checkbooks to cover increased costs?
There's any number of words you could use to describe Local 234 President Willie Brown, but this one says it all: "the most hated man in Philadelphia."
Iceman Cliff Lee didn't have his lights-out stuff last night, but it was good enough as the Cardiac Kids v. 2.0 forced the World Series to a Game 6 with an 8-6 win. It'll be Pedro vs. Horseface on Wednesday.
Fortunately, Philly got some measure of victory over New York yesterday, as the Eagles trounced the New Jersey York Giants, 40-17.
Pat's King of Steaks has been breaking the law for more than 20 years. The cheesesteak giant never had a cafe license to allow outdoor seating, trash cans, and signs. Frank DiCicco is hoping to resolve the issue with legislation. Geno's does not seem to be doing anything illegal other than assualting your eyes with superfluous flourescent lighting.
SEPTA riders, prepare to get screwed by the Transit Workers Local 234 union if an agreement between SEPTA and the union is not reached by week's end. (Like local columnist Doron Taussig, we're sure the union's choice of timing for a potential strike—to coincide with the World Series—is pure coincidence.)
Pedro Martinez has been tapped by skipper Charlie Manuel to hurl game two of the World Series. Perhaps this means we'll get to see Pedro use his telescope in game one?
It looks like the Piazza at Schmidts is canning their $15 all-you-can-drink screenings of Phillies' games for the World Series, thanks to a shooting incident there during the Phightin's' NLCS win last week.
Could independent New Jersey gubernatorial candidate Chris Daggett actually affect the election, in favor of Jon Corzine?
The arrest total from the other night's NLCS win celebrations: 49. We think that's a surprisingly low number. Of course, just wait and see what happens if the Phillies win the World Series.
Dawn Stensland's contract will not be renewed at Fox29. Kerri-Lee Halkett will resume the role for the 10 PM newscast.

The 2008 Phillies were a surprising and welcome departure from the Philly sports norm. Let's face it: We've gotten used to coming up short—whether short or barely short. Not long after the Phillies paraded down Broad Street last Halloween, the Eagles returned the cosmos to their rightful balance. (Villanova's Final Four appearance was an unexpected bonus that threatened to upset the recently-restored natural order of things. Fortunately for the universe, North Carolina did not allow the end of days to come about.)

Remember way back when the Phillies were playing the Dodgers and we pointed out in the morning news roundup that MLB.com blew it and published a link to a story which had the Dodgers beating the Phillies 4-3 to tie the series at two games apiece? Well, the Inquirer ran a three-quarters page Macy's ad on the back page of the A section which says "CONGRATULATIONS PHILLIES! Back-to-Back Champs."

Mayors Nutter and Bloomberg are using the World Series (have we mentioned the Phillies are playing the Yankees?) as an opportunity to draw attention to community service. Unlike a cheesecake/cheesesteak bet, this friendly wager will have the losing mayor (whom we can only assume will be Bloomberg) visiting the winning mayor's city to work on a mural on a children's recreational center. Phillyist looks forward to Mayor Bloomberg's visit after the series.
