Phillyist Playlist: Chevelle at Festival Pier

A day after the legendary Flaming Lips grace the Festival Pier, WMMR brings in the hard rock for Jaxon's Low Dough Rock Show. Okay, there really isn't any correlation, we just really like the Flaming Lips. But we also like Chicago trio Chevelle (Myspace), playing on Sunday with Staind, Shinedown, and Halestorm (PA's own slightly heavier version of Paramore).

Phillyist Playlist: Billy Talent, Rancid, Rise Against at Festival Pier

Saturday at Festival Pier up-and-coming Canadians (read: HUGE in Canada, but just starting to get attention in the US and Europe), Billy Talent will be supporting punk veterans, Rancid, and semi-recent mainstream punk-pop crossover, Rise Against. Our first impression of the Canuck's brand new album, Billy Talent III is that it's instrumentally intriguing. There's definitely some nice guitar work and a couple of cool baselines, but unfortunately the lyrics and vocals aren't quite as strong. Luckily, we hear lead singer Ben Kowalewicz delivers an intense, high energy stage performance. And we can't wait to check a hard-hitting live version of single "Rusted from the Rain," a song Kowalewicz describes as having been built upon an "epic Soundgarden-like riff."

Rolling on a River: Nutter Kills Penn's Landing Corp., Creates New Corp. with Longer Name

It takes an awfully dysfunctional organization to make the Mayor of Philadelphia blush. But it happened this past Friday morning, when Michael Nutter disassembled yet another corrupt combination of former mayoral appointees, this time the board of directors of the Penn's Landing Corporation (PLC). After apologizing for his tardiness, he dryly noted, "Since the board has not had a meeting in more than two years, what's another 10 or 15 minutes?"

Paper Route's recent EP poses the question, "" In a weekend where this Phillyist saw six bands—including three of this Phillyist's favorite bands—and Paper Route was the first of those six, it would be easy for the answer to that question to be, "Yep," or at least, "Oh yeah, we did see Paper Route this weekend." But fortunately, Paper Route's set at Festival Pier on Friday night was strong enough that it stuck in our heads, despite seeing some other fantastic performers both Friday night and on Sunday night (which you'll read about tomorrow).

Sex doesn't have to be boring. In fact, it can be a ratings monster and can even turn into a movie you don't have to hide between your mattress and box spring. Yes, we know. Everyone knows, creepzilla.
