Yo, Philly in the News

  • And in other SEPTA strike news, the union is apparently considering a "revised offer" from SEPTA. Might the strike end by the evening rush hour, and perhaps more importantly, does the "revised offer" give in to some of the union's demands, which will pretty much require commuters to open up our checkbooks to cover increased costs?

The best from our friend Craig:

Drexel (2-3, 0-1): Drexel hasn't really given us much to get excited about over the last couple weeks. After getting past Cal State-Northridge in the battle of mediocrity, the Dragons pushed George Mason to the brink, but ended up falling to the Patriots by a point. Maybe because of a hangover from the George Mason game, Drexel was pretty lackluster in a loss to Fairfield. Can the team pull it back together? They've got a tough test on Thursday, hosting a 6-2 Niagra team (tickets) before going on the road to play Bucknell. And when they're done with that, they've got to travel to #17 Memphis. Realistically, the Dragons will probably be 2-6 or 3-5 after this stretch, so we'll be paying more attention to how they look in these games, particularly the Niagra game.

Drexel (1-1, 0-0): The Dragons got off to as good of a start, realistically, as we could hope for. They pulled out a close victory against Penn, but it wasn't for lack of trying to cough it up at the end. Fortunately for Drexel, Penn's Zack Rosen missed a key free throw in the closing moments of the game that could have possibly sent the game to overtime. In their next game, however, Drexel couldn't get anything going offensively, and ended up on the wrong end of a blowout against Georgetown. Upcoming games: Home vs. Cal State Northridge, Mon., 12/1/08, 7:00 p.m. (tickets).

With college hoops season tipping off, we're going to pick up where we left off last year with the Home Game: College Hoops Edition series of posts, with some modifications. We're going to stick to the Big 5 schools plus Drexel this year, and we're going to keep it to men's basketball—not because we have anything against women's hoops, but because our brains can only handle so much at any one time. So with the season getting underway, what's the outlook for Philadelphia's teams? Here's what we think.

Bucknell (2-1, 0-0): Lost to Cornell, 21-20. Next game: At Marist, Oct. 4, 1:00 p.m.

We told you to hurry, but because many of you may not have been able to make it to Penn on time, here's XPN's video coverage of The Kooks busking at the university.

If you're picking up a copy of Inquirer columnist Faye Flam's first book, The Score (subtitled "How the Quest for Sex Has Shaped the Modern Man") looking for a titillating chronicle of men's sex lives, look elsewhere. Likewise, if you're looking for groundbreaking scientific research explaining why, for instance, guys like porn, you've picked up the wrong book. Flam is a journalist, pure and simple, so she's neither trying to arouse nor to astound. What she is doing—what she does quite well—is reporting, educating, and informing.

Penn (0-0, 0-0) will open up their season this Saturday against Villanova at 3:30 p.m. (tickets).

Penn (0-0, 0-0) is inactive until September 20, when the Quakers will open up against Villanova (tickets).

Well, not exactly—but here he is at Penn, trying to convince people he is.

Dear Mr. Colbert—Stephen, if we may:

As we're sure you've noticed, we're big fans of Teachers Gone Wild here at Asshole of the Week. It seems like every week there's at least one story about a drug-dealing coach or a pedophillic teacher. But this week, one story got us thinking: how much blame can we put on the academic institutions who hire these people? Usually, we think the answer is "Not much." After all, people will go a long way to hide their transgressions, and in most cases, the schools will terminate the offenders in short order after the misdeeds come to light.

  • Chelsea Clinton was at Penn yesterday, stumping for her Mom, and said we should expect to see her and her family a lot in the near future. Which sounds like a threat to us. Beware, Philadelphians! They're coming! Watch the skies! Keep watching the skies! (BTW, in a related story, voter interest is surging in Pennsylvania suburbs.)
  • The good news for the Drexel men (12-19, 5-13) is that, unlike last year, they won't be sitting on the edges of their seats waiting to see if they get an invitation to the Big Dance. The Dragons ended their regular season with a Senior Night win over James Madison before losing on the road at Hofstra. With the regular season over, it's CAA tournament time, and Drexel will open with a matchup against Delaware. The Dragons and Blue Hens split their regular season games. For the women (17-11, 12-5), it was a good week: they posted wins over Towson and George Mason. Two Drexel players also earned individual CAA honors, with Gabriela Marginean being named CAA Player of the Week, and Jasmina Rosseel getting the nod as CAA Rookie of the Week. The women will wrap up their regular season at Georgia State tomorrow night.

  • Remember how Rick's Steaks was fighting to stay in the Reading Terminal Market? Well, the fight continues. A recent court ruling dismissed most of Olivieri's claims against Reading Terminal, but Olivieri's lawyer says they're still confident things will go Rick's way at the trial this summer.
  • The Drexel women (15-11, 10-5) were looking like contenders after three straight wins, including a spanking of William & Mary. But then reality set in, in the form of #10 Old Dominion. The men (11-18, 4-12) didn't have to worry about being exposed as mediocre–everyone knew they stunk. But apparently they still felt compelled to show everyone, in the form of losses to William & Mary and Fairfield. Their regular season will sputter to a merciful end at home against James Madison tonight, and then at Hofstra on Saturday. The women host Towson tomorrow night, and George Mason comes to town Sunday afternoon. (Tickets for all home games are available through the Drexel Ticket Office: 1-866-4-DREXEL.)

Fun around town, for $10 or less:

The Drexel Lady Dragons (14-10, 9-4) got a pair of solid home wins this week, topping Delaware and James Madison. Now they'll take the show on the road, heading to William & Mary tomorrow night before a big showdown with #10 Old Dominion on Sunday. Things weren't quite as peachy for the men (11-16, 4-11). They lost a tough double-overtime game to Old Dominion last Thursday. Fortunately, they edged out a win against Delaware over the weekend. Tonight, the Dragons have an away game at William & Mary. Then they'll return home to host Fairfield Saturday afternoon. (Tickets for all home games are available through the Drexel Ticket Office: 1-866-4-DREXEL.)

What's new and/or interesting on TV this week.

  • Meanwhile, the Inquirer takes a closer look at a federal lawsuit filed by the Philadelphia Housing Authority, implicating Housing and Urban Development Secretary Alphonso Jackson, a Bush cabinet member.
  • Officials at the Hunting Park campus of Community Education Partners discovered on Sunday that one of their teachers - Arnesx Honore, 32 - had had his picture published the previous Friday among those of the city's most violent fugitives. They suspended him and police arrested him on Tuesday. Officials knew he had been arrested for assault, but also knew that the charges had been dropped. They didn't know that the assault had involved a minor (a 14-year-old girl, whose daughter he apparently fathered), and that the charges were refiled July of last year.
  • Drexel had one of those ho-hum weeks. The women (12-10, 7-4) split their games this week. They beat up on Georgia State before falling short against VCU. The men (10-15, 3-10) couldn't keep up with George Mason, but bounced back with a solid win over Towson. Tomorrow night, the Lady Dragons will be promoting breast cancer awareness at their home game against Delaware. The players will be wearing pink headbands and wristbands, and fans who wear pink will get free admission to the game. Then they'll host James Madison on Sunday. The men have a pair of away games this week, at Old Dominion tomorrow night, then at Delaware on Saturday. (Tickets for all home games are available through the Drexel Ticket Office: 1-866-4-DREXEL.)
