Democratic rivals Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama exchanged blows in Ohio Tuesday leading up to next week’s primary in that state. 161 delegates are at stake. The exchange of criticism focused largely on Clinton’s position on the North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA. On free trade, there appears to be little difference in the candidates’ rhetoric and voting records. Clinton, however, faces a challenge on the issue that Obama does not. Obama claims that......

The shapeless dough of the internet, formed into tasty pellets and baked to perfection, just for you. David Murray, who'd been set to star as Destro in the upcoming G.I. Joe movie, apparently had some troubles with his Visa, and couldn't make it into the States in time for the start of shooting. So now Chris Eccleston will get the role. Which is actually pretty cool. Doctor Destro! Word came out a while back that......

Phillyist loves competition. Phillyist loves food. So a food competition is sure to get our meringue in a muddle and set our ovens to 450. If you’re feeling it too, head over the Nexus exhibit Yummy and join Minnesota artist Megan McCready for Hotdish Philly. Bring a hotdish to share, and compete for the title Best Classic Hotdish or Best Neo-Classic Hotdish. The only rules are it must contain a starch, protein, vegetable, saucy binder,......

We told you in June that Nexus was planning a delicious exhibition, and the time has arrived: YUMMY: a celebration of craving, compulsion and culture opens tonight with a reception at the Nexus gallery from 6-9PM. The exhibit is designed to inspire "contemplation about the emotional and psychological nature of food as it impacts the individual experience of life especially within American culture," and seeks to do so through a combination of artifact (read: art......

The best of the internet, squirted out in flavorful neon globules, just for you. Here is a cake that you might not want to make for Timmy's 6th birthday party. But for the 40th birthday party of that creepy guy who works at the comic book store, absolutely. (Via) Hewlett-Packard is licensing a medical patch, designed based on their inkjet technology, with up to 90,000 microscopic needles per square inch, microprocessors, and a thermal unit.......

The time comes in every person's life to move out of the dorm room. This journey can be literal or metaphorical (believe us, Phillyist knows far too many folks who still act like adolescents, and are plenty old enough to know better). One major component of this transition: "What the hell do I put on the walls?" When the black light Jimi Hendrix poster starts to fade and the paper and ink representation of 50......

Last year when Jamie Cullum came to town, Brandi Carlile opened for him. What a great surprise for all of us in the audience. Not only was she a great performer, but her music rocked as well. Now we get a chance to see Brandi Carlile headline her own tour at World Cafe Live. She has already sold out this performance and the several other cities on her North American tour. Brandi Carlile released......

Councilman Frank DiCicco is declaring war on the casinos. In related news, some folks who had been charged with disorderly conduct after protesting the casinos outside the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board's offices last month have been acquitted. Are we heading toward tougher gun control laws in Philly? The Police Commissioner and various gun control advocates are calling for them, after the release of a report that highlights two dozen cases around the country, and......

We here at Phillyist love the holiday season as much as the next person. It always brings fond memories of great home cooked food, warm fireplaces and those wonderful family get-togethers where something always gets broken, someone always falls asleep really early, and someone else takes WAY too many pictures (Mom...). And while those things are what family and celebration are all about, this article delves into the more sordid and shady world of government......

The Who opened a new North American tour in Philly Tuesday night, and the Morning Call was there to write it up in incredible detail. Sounds like a pretty great show; we're sorry we missed it. Bad news, folks: PGW will be raising its rates again. The only positive thing is that it sounds like it probably won't go through until some time next year. The Boyd/Sameric theater could be in trouble again. The current......

Well, it's official, folks: we're going to have a citywide wi-fi hotspot! (Phillyist gets a tingle just typing that.) The deal between internet service provider EarthLink and non-profit Wireless Philadelphia (created by Mayor Street to oversee the plan) has been signed, and we are go. Now EarthLink just needs to install about 4,000 transmitters on various lightpoles. Don't worry, there will be no cost to city taxpayers...although we're not sure how that's going to......

This week's quote comes from Enid Bagnold, who once said: "The theatre is a gross art, built in sweeps and over-emphasis. Compromise is its second name." Now, on with the listings! This week’s quote comes from Shakespeare’s Richard III, act five, scene four. In this scene, the king’s horse has been killed in battle, and he’s so desperate to stop fighting on foot that he offers his kingdom for a horse. Full quote: “A horse! A horse! My kingdom for a horse!” Why did we choose it? Because Shakespeare starts us of this week. Now, on with the listings! Love’s Fire - We at Phillyist are......
