Dear Philly-Area Music Lovers:
Early last month, Phillyist discovered Waheed when they played a show at the Khyber. With members on vocals, guitar, bass, drums and scratching, this group (formerly known as Kameelah Waheed and Government Cheese) has cultivated a unique sound that's part funk, part rock, part hip hop and all good. On Mizu, their current album, you can hear how all of their influences come together, especially on tracks like "Fall Back," which consists of crisp rapping over powerful instrumentals.
Bands I Caught: The Bad News Bats, The Northern Liberties, The Mountain High, The Lowbudgets
It isn't for a little while now, when the weather will hopefully be a little bit warmer (although Phillyist makes no promises to that end), but we figured that the POPPED! festival, April 9-15, needs to be on your radar already.
The Tressels, who put out one of the better albums of 2006, Prison Wine, are playing a free set at the MillCreek Tavern tonight in West Philly. They're local guys on the way up, and put on one hell of a show. Check it out, it's free and the drink specials are decent. 9 to 11pm $2.50 domestic bottles, $2.50 domestic pints, $2.50 well drinks and $6 domestic pitchers. It is 21+, but given the ethos of the band, it may not be a good idea to expose their revelry and carousing to minors anyway.
