(Because we were.) DigPhilly let us know today that SEPTA will be offering free rides on any train leaving from or arriving in Center City after 6:30PM tonight and tomorrow night. This is to celebrate SEPTA's new extended hours (until 2:47AM!) on the R5 Paoli-Thorndale, R6 Norristown, and R7 Trenton lines. That means no rushing back fron New York to make your connection in Trenton and no leaving Manayunk before your favorite band takes the stage. It also means that your boring friends on the Main Line who always leave the party early can hang out with you until last call, no excuses. Why shouldn't we be celebrating along with SEPTA?

Looks like the race was even more fun for the rain.

Hey, you know those Red Bull commercials where they show the people racing down a hill in crazy DIY carts and it looks like a ton of fun? Well that's happening in Manayunk this Saturday! It's called the Red Bull Soapbox Race. 40 teams of up to four members each craft zany human-powered driving machines and then race to the finish. The hill they'll be racing down in this case is the infamous Wall. But teams are not judged on speed alone: creativity and showmanship are also taken into consideration. Admission is free, and the race will happen rain or shine, so bring an umbrella, or plan to get wet. Pits open at 11AM with the first race starting at 1pm.

  • Today is Philadelphia City Council's last meeting before summer break, so they're going to try to make decisions on a lot of leftover items at the last minute, including proposals to hike fines for littering, privatize the city's sludge plant, take control of Fairmount Park, force contractors to keep sidewalks open during construction projects, and allow dining decks fronting the Manayunk canal. We suspect they will also all join in on a rousing chorus of "School's Out for the Summer" at the end of the session.
  • A bunch of insane people actually had a bike race in Manayunk this past weekend, and other insane people actually went outside to watch it. Uh, whatever. We were inside keeping cool.
  • ) excitement, because this Saturday, our friends from PAWS will be hosting PAWS on Main in Manayunk.

Yes, it's Cinco de Mayo. We've got one event related to the fiesta, but that doesn't mean you can't throw together your own party. Just get some tequila and the number you'll need to call out of work tomorrow morning.

Fun around town, for $10 or less:
