Many of us were introduced to female politics during the “sleepover.” You remember—sometime around midnight, after watching two movies starring the Brat Pack, when somebody got frustrated with herself for eating too many Doritos, made a snide comment, and hurt another’s feelings? Within minutes, we had chosen sides, moved our sleeping bags, and shot mean looks until the birthday girl started crying and her mother threatened to send us all home. A few hours of sleep and some pancakes ironed out grudges, but all it took was another rude remark to spark the division again.

Considering that Phillyist needs a new car, we're a little disappointed that we just gave up knitting (and donated the accoutrement to a worthy cause even). Scion is sponsoring a DIY contest, Craft My Ride, which challenges the crafty among us to design a car accessory (which they helpfully define for us) and get the chance to win a 2008 Scion xD five-door subcompact. You have until October 22 to submit images and a description of your handmade doodad; finalists will mail in an example of their design. We aren't overburdened with the creativity ourselves, but they helpfully point out that keychains, seat covers, floor mats, and steering wheel covers are all fair game. Maybe a knitted hula girl bobbly? A dashboard cell phone caddy?
You know, for something that happens but once a month, First Friday always seems to just sneak up on us. It is, in fact, that time yet again, and we're psyched about some of this month's Old City goings-on.
To all the knitters out there:
We admit it: we're knitting dilettantes. Yes, Phillyist was one of those people who picked up the old needles a few years back because everyone else was doing it, and Debbie Stoller looked so damn cute in that blue cardigan. Our repertoire has heretofore consisted of scarves. In garter stitch. For everyone we've ever met. Sometimes, if we were feeling really crazy, we'd rib something. But we'd feel so naughty doing it.

For those of you in town this weekend, recovered from the excess and debauchery of Thanksgiving dinner and nonplussed by the prospect of standing in line for a sold-out movie, why not come up to Northern Liberties to join the folks at Art Star as they celebrate the gallery-boutique's one-year anniversary? The joint venture of Tyler grads Erin Waxman and Megan Brewster, Art Star always provides at least a few things you didn't see last time-- or anywhere else in Philly. And the store's website promises "plenty of food, drinks, music and fun," which sounds a damn sight better than seeing Steve Martin humiliate himself in more family-friendly cinematic dreck.
, but it was hard not to notice Steven Wells' whiny, vitrol-filled, diatribe against knitters.
. The 4th Annual Philly Knit Out offers a chance for local craftsters to socialize, trade secrets, learn new skills, and even do some good.
