Has anyone else noticed it is getting hot? And not just like, oh wow, its certainly summer kind of hot. More along the lines of HOLY CRAP! PACK UP OUR STUFF RIGHT NOW AND LETS MOVE TO THE 'BURBS AND LIVE UNDER A TREE! I was this close to buying a plastic baby pool, setting it up in the middle of my living room, strapping on my wife-beater and sitting in it until I saw the leaves turn color.

It is easy to feel overwhelmed when faced with entertaining a child in the city. It gets even more overwhelming when you're doing said entertaining on a budget, and even worse when you start to feel you're doing your child a disservice by just sitting around the house worrying about the expense. Truth be told, trying to take a class with a baby or even a toddler is a gamble. Is the baby going cry the whole way through? Will your two-year-old even LIKE playing the drums in music class or will she be more interested in hitting her own head with the drumstick? Will YOU like any of the other moms—'cause lets face it, at least half the reason we join any of these classes is to meet other moms and to have a conversation with someone who can use the potty without asking for wiping help. Who wants to pay a crazy amount of money only to find out that your baby hates whatever you signed up for, all the other moms are asshats, and there is never any parking?

...You should know that we're not.

With apologies to those readers who don't celebrate Christmas, I'm going to indulge myself a bit here. I love just about everything about Christmas. I actually enjoy Christmas shopping, stressful though it may be. (Which reminds me of the one thing I really don't love about Christmas: my January credit card bill.) I love all kinds of Christmas music, classical, the Bing Crosby standards, and Christmas rock. I also (Amazon).

We've told you some ways to make the season brighter for local kids. Now here's an opportunity to help out an entire family in one go: Greater Philadelphia Cares is sponsoring Adopt-A-Family. They will match you with a local family in need and provide a wish list. You'll go out and gather some goodies, and drop it all off at a local agency, which will then get it all to the family in question. Easy-- and it addresses that need some of us have to shop (ahem).

What's new and/or interesting in Philly theaters this weekend.

The Holiday season is in full swing in NYC, with holiday lights in Brooklyn, a giant snow globe in Bryan Park and Chanukah specials for ham. One citizen decided to go vigilante on annoying car alarms, a murder suspect used a fake Asian accent on the stand and a video of a man being beaten up by teenage girls on a subway shocked the city. And we interviewed soon-to-be-leaving-Gawker editor Choire Sicha, who said, "Wouldn't a kinder, gentler Gawker be hideously unreadable? No, we never talked about that. It would be hysterical but we haven't."

Although The Golden Compass is being compared to the Narnia Chronicles in some of the ads, the series that the book it's based on is a part of - Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy - is really the anti-Narnia: equal but exactly opposite to C.S. The graffitied 1988 Dodge Ram is the official vehicle of the First Person Story Tour. The Story Tour is an initiative of First Person Arts and Red Tettemer. Its goal: to collect real stories from real Philadelphians. By "real Philadelphians," we truly mean real Philadelphians: musicians, investment bankers, students, psychic advisers, and everything in between. Including kids at the zoo.
