CinePhillyist Reviews... Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

I think I can say with some confidence that however you felt about Michael Bay's first Transformers film, you will feel the same way about his second one. It's more of the same. More giant robots getting into epic slow motion fights while things explode all around them. More Megan Fox in sexy outfits running in slow motion. More ponderous narration. More of John Turturro thoroughly embarrassing himself for what I hope is a very large paycheck. More lowbrow "comedy." More, more, more.

Phillyist Playlist: Liam and Me at the Khyber

Somewhere, we're not sure where, on this Phillyist's top ten list of favorite things in the whole wide world (which contains no fewer than fourteen items) are entries for "good local bands" and "gratuitous references to Coen Brothers movies." So I could hardly contain my excitement when I heard about Liam and Me (MySpace), a local band that draws their name from one of the most memorable lines from . "With a name evoking John Turturro's hilarious turn as Jesus Quintana," we thought, "this band had better not suck." But Editor Jill, who is familiar with Liam and Me and interviewed their frontman, Matt O'Dowd, for this very site a while back, assured me that they were a quality band with a great sound.

Despite the fact that Transformers is a film based on a cartoon, which itself was based on a story that a marketing company came up with to sell a line of toys, and despite the fact that it was directed by Michael Bay (a piece of news which, when it first came out, caused thousands of nerds to cry out in terror, and then become suddenly silent... before running to the internet to voice their displeasure), I was pretty excited about it. I tried to temper my excitement, though, to avoid a let-down. I tried to tell myself that I shouldn't expect something really intelligent or moving. I tried to tell myself that it would be a big, dumb summer blockbuster, and would therefore be all about action, with very little character development and probably not a lot of good dialogue, and that I should embrace that - that I should go in expecting that. Anyway, there would be tons of action, plenty of giant robots hitting each other, and lots of incredible visual effects, and that would be enough to make a really entertaining movie.
