  • President Obama's address to schoolchildren this afternoon was very well received locally.
  • Bad news for Joey Chestnut: Wing Bowl, Philadelphia’s annual gluttonfest will be a local-amateurs-only event once again, WIP sports host Angelo Cataldi proclaimed this morning. Tickets for the Jan. 30 event will go on sale through ComcastTix at 10 a.m., Dec. 15.
  • 29-year-old Anthony Derubeis of Upper Darby decided to barbecue some books on his grill yesterday morning. When firefighters arrived, he started throwing stuff at them, like plates and full water bottles. Then he went inside and refused to come out, and eventually ended up getting into a fight with police, who subdued him. "We feel the guy may have some mental-health issues that have to be dealt with," said the Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood Sr. No kidding!
  • If you weren’t there, you missed “a critical turning point in our culture,” not to mention an early morning buzz and heartburn. The results are in from Wing Bowl 16, and two-time defending champ Joey Chestnut defeated the mighty El Wingador, who came in third. Chestnut downed 241 wings, setting a new Bowl record. El Wingador was the favorite (at least crowd favorite) to win, and the disappointment was made worse by his announcement that he is retiring from competitive eating. It is truly a dark day. Chestnut had previously said that win or lose this would be his last Wing Bowl, but apparently the thrill of victory reminded him why he got into the sport in the first place (or something), and we may be seeing him again.
