City Paper Round Up

Science! Chemistry plus mummies means new thinking about building materials and the pyramids, mice may cure MD, baldies may soon have more options than just Rogaine, and fish smoothies may help the environment. All in a day’s work for city researchers.

We Must Pick Ourselves Up, Dust Ourselves Off... And Eat Some Ribs

We'd like to introduce you to Andrew P. Goodman, an old schoolmate of Editor Jill's, and our newest addition to the Phillyist staff. Andrew is a planner at Penn Praxis and sometime-contributor to PlanPhilly.com—meaning we can count on him to keep us updated on all sorts of cool stuff going on in Philly's urban development. But for now, he's just going to tell us about some serious soul food. Welcome, Andrew!

Yo, Philly in the News

  • The Eagles will not be going to the Super Bowl this year, and as a result, sports merchandisers and cops had nothing to do last night. On the bright side, we won't have to endure the Tampa press again disparaging Philly fans.

    PW Run Down

Remember all that talk about “mandates?” Well, if Wendy Lee's story is any indication, Obama’s got it in the bag.

After months of anticipation it has finally arrived: Inauguration Day. Not presidential, sadly; no, we have to endure that circus for another year yet. Today is the day Michael Nutter officially takes the reins as mayor and turns this city around, making it cleaner and safer (hopefully not in that order). Sadly if you don't have your tickets by now you will not be witnessing the event; the only public ticketed event, an "Inaugural Celebration" at the Navy Yard, has been sold out since last week, and the big swearing in at the Academy of Music is invite-only (note to Nutter: where's the Phillyist love?). We will be able to see him tomorrow though, when he opens City Hall up for a free public reception from 4-8PM (there's even promise of refreshments).

Texas is thawing, the Northeast is freezing, and a sort of natural order seems almost restored to the Ist-A-Verse. Almost.

  • Yesterday, it was another Philly Mayoral candidate's turn to announce his plan to fight crime in the city - Michael Nutter.
  • This has been a rough week for your -ist pals, though you wouldn't know it from the great posts all over the network. Plagued with server problems, our tech team (led by the great Neil Epstein) toiled around the clock to solve the glitches as they arose. Seriously, we've said, typed, and thought the phrase "server problems" more in the past week than we have for the last 35 years combined. Why not say it a few more times, just for fun? For example, SFist is sure the San Francisco Chronicle wishes they could blame server problems for this error. But this San Francisco man that appeared on "The Daily Show" is, sadly, no glitch in the system.
