Phillyist Interviews... Jim Florentine

You might know comedian Jim Florentine (MySpace) best as Special Ed from the Comedy Central show Crank Yankers. (You know, where you laughed, but then thought you might just be going to hell for laughing?) Phillyist got a chance to talk to Florentine before he yanks your cranks this week with a four-night run at Helium Comedy Club.

Philly's Funniest

Here's one for the standup comedy junkies: Comedy.com has posted their list of 10 funniest comedians in Philadelphia. (Even better, they didn't go with "Phunniest," for which we must give them mad props.)

Phillyist Interviews... Christian Finnegan

Standup comedian Christian Finnegan, who has the benefit of being both hilarious and adorable, will be appearing tonight through Saturday at Helium Comedy Club. You might know him from VH1's Best Week Ever, or perhaps from his spots on Countdown with Keith Olbermann, or you may have the pleasure of knowing his stand-up from his albums, Two for Flinching and his latest, Au Contraire.

Phillyist Interviews... Funnyman Chip Chantry

A lot of comedians need a shtick. And that's not to say it's a bad thing: heck, a lot of trailblazing comedians relied on their shticks and achieved great success and influenced comedians who followed them. George Carlin's profanity and Sam Kinison's scream (without either of which, we would not have the brilliance of Denis Leary), Gallagher's sledge-o-matic (which is directly to blame for Carrot Top, who was actually surprisingly funny when this Phillyist saw him many, many years ago), Foxworthy's "You might be a redneck..." (which is probably the greatest one-liner gimmick ever). So we love comedians with shtick; but sometimes, it's refreshing to see a comedian who can just go on stage and be themselves, and be very, very funny. We also love local talent. To our delight, we found both in local comedian Chip Chantry.

Well, not quite—but close.

If you're still finalizing your weekend plans, you might want to add Aisha Tyler's show to your list. phillyBurbs had a little chat with her, and we say anybody that can put away that many cheesesteaks in one sitting can't be bad. We are also giggling imaging her yelling "BOOOYAAAA" to her 79-year-old grandfather, because that's the kind of Obamaphiles we are. She'll be at Helium tonight and tomorrow at 8 & 10:30PM, with or without protective head gear.

Deep in the heart of 20th and Sansom Streets, a murder of Philadelphia comedians have been taking part in Helium Comedy Club’s annual Philly’s Phunniest Person Competition. For the past three years, over 100 local comedians have taken to Helium’s stage with the hope that they will crush their fellow comics and be named Philly’s Phunniest!!!

Mike Birbiglia is, and how you should totally go see his show this week? We wouldn't tell you to do something we wouldn't do ourselves. (Well, that's a lie. We often tell people to do things we wouldn't, simply because the outcome is pretty funny. Example: Go try to eat ten saltines in under a minute with no water. We'll be waiting.)

and wouldn't let me out of the house until I admitted that, yeah, the dude was kind of funny. (After her thankfully brief Dane Cook obsession, Birbiglia was practically Carlin, I promise.) By which I mean: I know Mike Birbiglia. And Mike Birbiglia? Is hilarious.

I have missed the cosy pink confines of Phillyist these past couple of weeks. I was excited about the response to my first article (much of which was more funny and interesting than the article itself). It has, however, been a long couple of weeks. It seems that my former employer was restructuring, and anyone who didn't necessitate a severance package was first against the wall. So, of course, my "temp" status marked me for deletion.
