Penn Scientists Featured in HBO's "The Alzheimer's Project"

We spend more time talking with our families about the health threats that won’t affect us than acting on the ones that do. It is easier to hypothesize over swine flu than it is to discuss hereditary diseases—isn't it? Most of us don't want to talk about our loved ones getting sick because we fear losing them, we fear taking care of them, and we fear our own mortality. HBO's The Alzheimer's Project, a four-part documentary airing this week, challenges this thought pattern.

This Aussie comedy series is coming to a U.S. television near you, but you can catch a sneak peek at tonight's screening. Summer Heights High is a mockumentary television series in which three of the characters are played by the creator and writer, Chris Lilley. The show is no stranger to controversy—as its own network once reported.

We're excited to note that HBO will be airing a documentary about a Philadelphia painter. The Art of Failure is a feature documentary "about the life of Chuck Connelly, a brilliant yet enigmatic painter who had great success as a young artist in the art boom of the 1980s but who has perpetuated a long downward spiral in his career due to ego, drugs, women, and alcohol. He now is increasingly fearful of his fate. Driven by desperation, Connelly comes up with several crazy schemes to sell his work to galleries and stage a comeback in the art world."

Many of you may not know that Philly is home to the notes Bram Stoker developed as he wrote his acclaimed classic Dracula. The bragging rights are cool enough, but it turns out that the notes, housed at the Rosenbach Museum and Library, drew the attention of HBO while they were filming a documentary about the nocturnal blood drinkers. The doc itself is playing second fiddle to an hour-long series about vampires called True Blood from the minds behind Six Feet Under.

I have been suffering from an incredibly huge bout of writer's block lately. That means two things: another one of my fifteen ideas for television shows that "can write themselves" will have to remain unwritten and all of my fans at the Phillyist have been without reading material for too long. So since my wife and Mom steadfastly refuse to read the paper, I thought I just had to get something on the site. Who's ready for some hate!?!?

Sometimes, it's hard to resist the hate. You may not be having an especially bad day – you may in fact be in a good mood. But sometimes the snark comes so naturally that you have to marinate in it. Like it's Lawry's.

Holy smokes! Giant fish on the MTA, Paris Hilton in jail, then out, then in again, Al Gore, goatses, blumpkins, Matt Damon, and baby art critics! It's been a busy week across the Ist-A-Verse, and here's a smattering of what's been going on.

This week, Return to Sender and Phillial team up to give the men of Philadelphia the hand they so desperately need.

Philly always has had an inferiority complex. We live in the shadow of New York. Our sports teams always lose. London totally has a better Live 8 lineup. We're the largest city without a Gothamist site.
