Top 5 Reasons Why We Hate the Yankees

Unless you've been hiding under a rock, you're well aware the World Series is scheduled to start today. We're sort of skeptical this rain is ever going to stop, but while we're all waiting for that to happen check out our run-down of why the Yankees suck (and some reasons why the Phillies are better) below:

About Tonight

Phillyist's quick-picks for a rock your socks off start to the weekend.

Our old friend Harry the K was laid to rest yesterday after getting the best send-off anyone could ever hope for. Here's a clip from the memorial service.

Honor Thy Harry

Are you headed to the game tonight? If so, you've got about four hours to round up your red.

Phillies Announce Harry Kalas Tributes

The first round of announcements from the Phillies regarding events to honor Harry Kalas were made yesterday. Most notably, through the rest of the season starting today, all of the Phillies will wear an HK patch on their uniform. The patch will be on each player's chest, near his heart. If that's doesn't tug at your own heartstrings, we don't know what will.

Remembering Harry Kalas

Most of us have never known the Phillies without Harry Kalas. Now, as fun as baseball has always been, and will continue to be, watching these games will never quite be the same.

We'll miss you...

Yo, Philly in the News

  • The original investors in the Inquirer, Daily News and philly.com have offered up $50 million to its creditors to crawl out of bankruptcy. The offer was disclosed yesterday through a filing with U.S. Bankruptcy Court here in Philadelphia.
  • As the Phils are preparing to take on the Nats at Washington's home opener this afternoon, it's been reported that Harry Kalas, the voice of the Phils, was found passed out in the press box. He's been taken to the GW Hospital. Not much more details have been announced, but we'll keep you updated as we hear them.

From all of us here at Phillyist, we hope you're doing okay Harry.

Update: Philly.com has now reported that Harry Kalas has died at the age of 73 in DC this afternoon.

What an incredible loss for the Phils and the fans today. Not that it matters, but the Phillies will continue with today's game afternoon game against the Nats, but their trip to the White House tomorrow will be suspended.

Dust off those pens with the big fluffy feathers at the ends: It’s time to play Cyrano. In honor of their East Coast premiere of David DiChiera's Cyrano, the Opera Company of Philadelphia exhorts you to “unleash your romantic spirit just in time for Valentine’s Day” with a love letter contest. One lucky winner will rack up significant significant-other points: on February 15, a limo will take you and your beloved to a dinner at Le Bec-Fin, followed by box seating at the Cyrano premiere and an invite to the champagne intermission reception. Two runners-up will receive pairs of tickets to the premiere and can also partake of the champagne.

It’s still hard to believe. The Phillies have found their way into October, alive and thriving. And they are National League East champions. Sounds a little foreign, but we’d be lying if there wasn’t a sweeter sound in Philadelphia. The moment when Brett Myers struck out Wily Mo Pena, threw his glove straight into the air, and his teammates mobbed him was a defining moment for this Phillyist. After years of hearing Harry Kalas drone...

We couldn't let the day pass without noting that legendary Phillies broadcaster Harry Kalas was given the honor of singing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" during the seventh inning stretch of last night's Phillies-Cubs game at Wrigley Field. The Hall of Famer did quite an impressive job, too. He was right on tune throughout the game, and -- like any good broadcaster -- didn't tell the fans who to root, root, root for. Then again, Kalas grew up in the Chicago suburb of Naperville, and told WGN TV during the eighth inning that he grew up listening to Cubs games on the radio.
