  • Finger pointing in Harrisburg is costing Philadelphia its budget. The city is inching closer to laying off 3,000 employees because of the budget impasse in the state capital.
  • For Free Film, Go West, Young Man (or Woman)

    Like free movies? Like our state capital? Well then you're in luck! This weekend marks the 2009 Harrisburg Arts Fest Film Festival, held in conjunction with the city's annual Memorial Day Weekend Arts Fest. With dozens of films screening for free at three separate venues in Harrisburg, new films will join classics (Eraserhead, anyone?) on the four-day bill. So come on! Less behind-the-scenes drama and less expensive than some other film festivals we could mention? We think it's well worth the gas money.

  • The city outlined its planned review process for the Foxwoods casino proposed for the Gallery at Market East yesterday, which includes yet-to-be-scheduled community meetings in Chinatown and Washington Square West. In addition to the City Planning Commission—which ultimately will approve or reject the Foxwoods plan—the casino design will be vetted by an inter-agency group including the city's Commerce and Law Departments, the Mayor's office of Transportation and Utilities, and the Redevelopment Authority. Though the final development plan is not expected to be finished for several months, Planning Commission Executive Director Alan Greenberger said the review process would begin well before then.
  • Michelle Obama will make several appearances this week in the Philadelphia area. John McCain spoke yesterday at the Delaware County Courthouse.
  • The Daily News describes a climate of fear and anger in Frankford, with residents on the lookout for a serial rapist. "Anticrime activists passed out flyers in the neighborhood yesterday while police—in a massive manhunt—took the unusual move of releasing the name and picture of a man wanted for questioning." Keep in mind Dorrell Shaw, 26, has not been charged, and is only wanted for questioning. Click through to take a look at the police sketch.
  • What's new and/or interesting on TV this week.

  • A new veterans cemetery to be known as Washington Crossing National Cemetery is scheduled to start construction in Bucks County next year, with the first burials starting toward the end of the year. The plans for the new cemetery will be available for review tonight during a public briefing by the Department of Veterans Affairs at Washington Crossing Historic Park.
  • A bunch of insane people actually had a bike race in Manayunk this past weekend, and other insane people actually went outside to watch it. Uh, whatever. We were inside keeping cool.
  • Raise your hand if you’ve ever clipped a pothole too hard and ended up with a flat tire! Chances are you aren’t alone, according to The Road Information Program (TRIP), which just released a report on the sad state of the nation’s roads.

  • Daily News sources say that at a new conference this morning at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, state Senator Vincent Fumo will announce his decision to give up his re-election bid and retire from the Legislature at the end of the year.
  • The primary season is heating up in Pennsylvania! Both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama will be making appearances in the area today. Clinton spoke in Scranton yesterday, and should be on Q102 right about now; you can listen to the show online here. Then she has a noon campaign event in Harrisburg at The Forum, and a Philadelphia rally at 6PM at Temple University's McGonigle Hall. Meanwhile, Obama is scheduled to tour a Bucks County factory in Fairless Hills today. Tomorrow, the United Black Clergy of Philadelphia and Vicinity meets to consider a presidential endorsement, and they're expected to pick Obama, despite a history of affection for the Clintons. Finally, you might be interested to know that starting tonight at 11PM, and continuing every Tuesday night until the primary on April 22nd, political reporter Bruce Gordon and anchor Kerri-Lee Halkett will host a half-hour special on Fox 29 focusing on the Presidential primary contest in Pennsylvania.
  • The Inquirer is getting excited about the Philadelphia Flower Show, which will have a preview opening for selected guests tomorrow, and then open to the general public on Sunday.
  • Both the Inquirer and the Daily News are taking a look this morning at the three finalists for the job of chief executive officer of the School District of Philadelphia, and the Inquirer also has a look at the 45 advisory committee members who will actually be interviewing the finalists and selecting the CEO from among them.
