Folks, please don't try this at home. Or in the Ikea parking lot.
Don’t know about you, but when we think about driving in the city we start to get slight palpitations. Part of it could be that we’re used to walking and Septa; the thought of paying exorbitant amounts to park in UCity on a Friday night convinces us that the El isn’t so bad after all. Plus, there’s storage: when we were living on the outskirts of Center City a parking spot would have cost 2/3 of our rent. Don’t get us started on the exhaust fumes, particularly those from the ancient chariots some of us have to drive around in because after parking costs we can’t afford an upgrade. But there are times when having a car is a necessity, even in the city. You need one to escape the heat and exhaust for the cool ocean breeze in the summer for instance, or to do an IKEA run. And so a balance must be struck.

The best of the internet, chopped into tiny bits and grilled for your enjoyment. Filter has released their list of the overall Top Ten Albums of 2007, as well as a bunch of supplementary top 10 albums by their staff. Mostly unsurprising indie rock of the moment picks, but some interesting stuff. And hey these remind us of other lists we've seen lately... (Via Samantha) We couldn't care less about the upcoming reality show Clash...
Gothamist learned about the craziest urban nightmare come true: A huge python found in the bathroom pipes. It was also a nightmare for some Yankees fans, as manger Joe Torre declined to come back and manage the Bronx Bombers. At least the city's attempt to give some direction to subway riders was interesting, pranksters went shirtless at the Fifth Avenue Abercrombie & Fitch and the I Heart Brooklyn Girls calendars came out. And just in time for Halloween, the Chocolate Jesus is back.

March is trying to go out like a lamb, but some damn chill yesterday morning left Phillyist wondering when the weather is going to warm up for good. Not like global warming for good, but you get it.
We at Phillyist are just as surprised as you are that good old Punxatawney Phil, of the Gobbler's Knob (heh) Phils, emerged this morning and , for only the fifteenth time in a century. Take THAT, global warming naysayers.
The shapeless dough of the internet, formed into tasty pellets and baked to perfection, just for you.
Given the low cure rate for many cancers and the fact that cancer will affect one in three people in their lifetimes, Lance Armstrong is looking to create a massive lobbying group for and by the people to ensure the improvement of cancer care, treatment, and research, while ensuring that such programs receive the requisite funding. As we are still behind in diagnosing, preventing, and treating this pervasive disease, it needs to be placed higher on the agenda in Washington. Watch the new campaign video to see how you can help. The Live Strong campaign has supported other common sense issues, such as pushing for unfettered stem cell research. (Science and common sense are hard to come by, though, when veto power is in the hands of someone who doesn't believe in global warming.)
My day was packed on Saturday, but I live 100 feet off of Broad Street (all of these pictures were taken from my corner), so I figured, what the hell, I'll wake up a little earlier so that I can see my first-ever Mummers Parade. It was a gorgeous day (yes, I know, Global Warming=bad, but who doesn't love pretty weather?), and so I simply had to take some photos. Full-sized versions of all of them are available at Phillyist's Mummers 2007 photoset on Flickr.
We knew we were in for a treat this weekend when we saw three different drum stations crammed on the small stage area of World Cafe Live Upstairs. A pair of conga drums were sandwiched between a snare drum set and a regular drum kit. One by one, the artists from Chicago Afrobeat Project (CAbP) strolled out onto the stage. There were indeed three different percussionists, two saxophone players, an organist, a guitarist, and a five-string bassist.
Based on conversations we've overheard and/or have been involved in lately, this Phillyist is convinced that we're the only person left in Philly who hasn't seen An Inconvenient Truth (or as it's more commonly called, "that Al Gore movie"). It's not that we're not concerned about the environment and the management of our resources - it's just we're already bummed enough about this insane heatwave; we have no desire to be depressed any further.
