I Have A Baby and Ten Dollars... Now What?

Studio 34, home of a recently featured Mom and Baby yoga mention, is starting a fantastic new class for kids (ages 18 months to 4 years) and they want you to try it out for free. Today, October 15th, check out the kids' ZoomDance series at 10:30 a.m. What is ZoomDance? I didn't know, either, but Studio 34 was kind enough to explain it to me. A high-energy class of dance, music, story-telling, and imagination which promotes literacy and creative expression. In other words, it's kinda a perfect class. Each week the group will read a different book and then act it out, inventing characters, exploring the space, and showing off—everything kids love to do. A seven week course, the whole session will run you $70, however if you sign up before the 15th, they'll knock off ten. Pre-register and get all your questions answered here or, feel free to give Studio 34 a call at 610-937-2032.

Food junkies, unite! In American Food Writing: An Anthology With Classic Recipes, food columnist Molly O’Neill has compiled the crème-de-la-creme from famous foodies everywhere. From Fast Food Nation author Eric Schlosser to the one and only Julia Child, from globe-trotting Anthony Bourdain to my personal Jesus, Michael Pollan - hail, hail, the gang’s all here! There are also some writers you wouldn’t associate with food writing, but are sure thrilled to have in the mix: David Sedaris, Walt Whitman, and Langston Hughes, among others. If your favorite writer has written about food, chances are it’s included in O’Neill’s extensive yet compact collection, which also features recipes in case all the food writing inspires you to get your cook on.

Itemize Me: Last Chance for Citizen Input into Nutter's Budget Cuts

Since we know you are all well-informed Philly-loving citizens, you are well aware that the City of Brotherly Love has tripped and fallen into a pit of budgetary fire and brimstone. Last fall, Mayor Nutter announced that the City had to cut $1 billion from its budget over the next five years, so $200 million each year, effective immediately. And he did so primarily by closing 13 libraries, all but a handful of the 70+ public swimming pools the city operates, and a number of fire stations as well. He also made general cuts all around, to programs that many Philadelphians hold dear, such as the Mural Arts Program and Philadelphia Green.

  • Demonstrators protested the Philadelphia library closings yesterday at City Hall. Mayor Nutter and Free Library Director Siobhan Reardon were declared "in contempt of the people's court" by costumed members of the ad hoc Coalition to Save the Libraries. The two were accused of working to sabotage a judge's ruling to keep open 11 branches that had been scheduled to be shuttered. The demonstrators chanted and danced as the orchestra's music reverberated against the municipal marble.
  • Abe Farkas was shot and killed on his bus during an apparent robbery shortly after 7 p.m. Friday on West 5th Street near Fulton Place. For 15 years, Farkas, of Woolwich Township N.J., provided food and necessities out of that same bus to the people of Chester, a city without a grocery store. Police have not yet arrested or identified a suspect. Farkas was 56.

The recent election made us wonder what we could do for our country, and PW's Holiday Guide has some suggestions on what you can do for your city, in the form of nine charities to consider helping out this holiday season, including the Philadelphia Student Union.

As mentioned earlier, Mayor Nutter is speaking today to the City of Philadelphia regarding some major budget cuts that will be taking place. According to the text in the draft of his speech as posted on 6ABC.com, some of the major changes will include: reducing police department overtime and leaving 200 vacant positions unfilled; reducing fire department overtime and cutting 5 engine companies and 2 ladder companies; closing 11 libraries and eliminating Sunday hours at three regional libraries; keeping all recreation centers open but in the summer closing 62 of 73 outdoor pools and 6 of 8 indoor pools and in the winter closing three ice rinks unless private funding can be secured; spending less money on street resurfacing and ending residential street cleaning, snow removal on tertiary streets, and bulk and tire collections; laying off more than 220 city employees and eliminating nearly 600 unfilled positions, more than 1,660 seasonal part-time jobs and about 570 contractual, non-city jobs.
