It's sort of easy to see why Chevelle is oft mistaken for a Christian band. And by "see," we literally mean . The band consists of three wholesome, clean-cut, good-looking, All-American boys—nay, brothers—who just happen to know how to play the rock-n-roll. The music, however, bared no real resemblance to what's generally expected of "Christian Rock." Now, we know we're stereotyping (give us a break, the our knowledge of Christian rock is sort of limited to the horrific spectacle that is Creed and the surprisingly cool Jars of Clay), but there wasn't anything especially glorifying or redemptive about Chevelle's songs. No, in fact lyrically and musically, we'd say it's more gnarled and brooding. Gnarled and brooding being a good thing. Radio staples "The Red," and "Send the Pain Below" were aptly performed live.

A day after the legendary Flaming Lips grace the Festival Pier, WMMR brings in the hard rock for Jaxon's Low Dough Rock Show. Okay, there really isn't any correlation, we just really like the Flaming Lips. But we also like Chicago trio Chevelle (Myspace), playing on Sunday with Staind, Shinedown, and Halestorm (PA's own slightly heavier version of Paramore).
Saturday at Festival Pier up-and-coming Canadians (read: HUGE in Canada, but just starting to get attention in the US and Europe), Billy Talent will be supporting punk veterans, Rancid, and semi-recent mainstream punk-pop crossover, Rise Against. Our first impression of the Canuck's brand new album, Billy Talent III is that it's instrumentally intriguing. There's definitely some nice guitar work and a couple of cool baselines, but unfortunately the lyrics and vocals aren't quite as strong. Luckily, we hear lead singer Ben Kowalewicz delivers an intense, high energy stage performance. And we can't wait to check a hard-hitting live version of single "Rusted from the Rain," a song Kowalewicz describes as having been built upon an "epic Soundgarden-like riff."
Paper Route's recent EP poses the question, "" In a weekend where this Phillyist saw six bands—including three of this Phillyist's favorite bands—and Paper Route was the first of those six, it would be easy for the answer to that question to be, "Yep," or at least, "Oh yeah, we did see Paper Route this weekend." But fortunately, Paper Route's set at Festival Pier on Friday night was strong enough that it stuck in our heads, despite seeing some other fantastic performers both Friday night and on Sunday night (which you'll read about tomorrow).
No, not the kind that your parents made you get to earn extra money as a kid, but the kind that will be playing at Festival Pier at Penn's Landing tonight. Paper Route (MySpace) is the opening band on Paramore's Summer Riot tour, and the Philadelphia stop happens to be on this fine Friday. Rain be damned! The band recently released an EP, . And the buzz around them is phenomenal. They've drawn comparisons to The Postal Service. It's kind of there, but based on the admittedly few Paper Route songs we've heard, we think the more appropriate comparison is to another Nashville-based band who's in town this weekend (and who has an eerily similar name), Paper Rival. Paper Rival, Paper Route. Paper Route, Paper Rival. Uma, Oprah. Oprah, Uma.
...on Wednesday, because outdoor concerts in a thunderstorm can be less than enjoyable. Weather.com tells us that Wednesday will bring scattered showers, so we're hoping they scatter to somewhere other than Festival Pier at Penn's Landing, because that's where O.A.R. (MySpace) will be playing.
Sex doesn't have to be boring. In fact, it can be a ratings monster and can even turn into a movie you don't have to hide between your mattress and box spring. Yes, we know. Everyone knows, creepzilla.

This Phillyist has a special place in her heart for Kweller, whose last CD, specifically the song "My Apartment," got her through a break-up and two moves. We're a little sad he chose Brooklyn over Philly for his three-night stint, during which he'll play his three records in their entirety, one each night.
