Now that it's the fall, and we won't have to deal with annoying shore traffic, we think it's about high time we made another trip to Atlantic City. All we need is a good excuse to do so, because, frankly, the lure of the blackjack table alone isn't enough to overcome our desire to save the gas and toll money. So we need a little added incentive. Thankfully, we're getting it, and from one of our favorite bands, no less: Death Cab for Cutie (MySpace) will be playing the House of Blues Atlantic City at Showboat on Sunday night.

How about this unseasonably cool weather? Saturday night was pretty much a perfect night for a concert. So our only concern heading into the Maroon 5/Counting Crows show was whether the performers would measure up to the ideal setting.

Every Tuesday and Thursday, we'll be posting events that are going on sale during the current week. This Thursday post only collects the latest announcements, so definitely check the Tuesday post for any you may have missed.

We love food. Not just because it's a necessary substance for sustaining life. Perhaps, we should say we're in love (NSFW).

This weekend there are several cool dance events going down, most of them on the cheap. We were going to front-load (dance-load?) Frugal today, but then thought it might be better to devote a little more space to each. Besides, with all this slushiness, wouldn't you rather watch other people move than do so yourself?

This week's quote comes from Eugene Ionesco, who wrote: "Drama lies in extreme exaggeration of the feelings, an exaggeration that dislocates flat everyday reality."

Did anyone else see where September went? It was Labor Day, we went to the closet to pack up our white shoes, and suddenly it's the terminal week. Next year, September, give us a little more transition time? Also, knock it off with the 90s.

Once again, nothing new this week, as theatre companies and performers around the city prepare for the Live Arts and Fringe Festivals. Check back here next week for our preview. Meanwhile, to make up for the short listings, here's a longer quote, from 1930s and '40s star of stage and screen Nelson Eddy (the handsome devil you see here):

As with last year, Phillyist will be giving separate coverage to Philadelphia Live Arts and Philly Fringe shows, so our listings through the end of the month may look a little sparse. No fear – there’s still plenty of live entertainment around the city. Now, on with the listings!

The shapeless dough of the internet, formed into tasty pellets and baked to perfection, just for you.

Things are slowing down right now, in the weeks before the Philadelphia Live Arts and Philly Fringe Festivals. But that doesn't mean that all of the theatres in Philadelphia are dark. Now, on with the listings!

Guitarist, vocalist, songwriter, and Philly dude Andrew Lipke put out his first album, The Way Home..., on Drexel University's student-run record label, MAD Dragon Records, back in February. (The disc was produced by Emmy Award-winning composer and Drexel Professor Jim Klein, so it's got Drexel all over it.) We've been listening to it recently, and we rather like it. It's mighty entertaining, catchy indie alterna-pop with lovely harmonies and an occasional touch of almost orchestral-sounding romanticism (which is probably there thanks to the piano). And although the album does contain rather boring and unimaginative love songs like "Stick By You," you'll quickly forget them after hearing fantastically rollicking, rocking tracks like "Moving Back to Paradise." If you want to check Lipke out for yourself, you're in luck! He'll be playing at various venues all over the area for the next couple of months. You can see a detailed list of his upcoming shows at his MySpace page, but we'll just post the info about his soonest show below, which he'll be playing with another local boy, Matt Duke.
