Mix-tapes your specialty? Always thought you could spin tunes at least as well as those college kids they throw onto Y-Rock every now and again? Know a band that is truly awesome but also under-appreciated because no one else has as good a musical taste as you? Well, today's your lucky day; share your best picks with XPN's Program Director for a day. Give them a call at 1-800-565-WXPN between now and 1PM and your favorite tune will be broadcast for all to hear. Unless it's that indie band you saw at the church last week. XPN is cool, but not quite that cool.
God Bless John Oates. And his 'stache.

Dear Radio 104.5:
Girls Rock Philly, a day camp for girls ten through eighteen years of age, is set to run this summer from August 6-11. The camp teaches aspiring female rock stars how to play instruments, write songs, create merchandise, sell merchandise - basically just about everything they'd need to know to start their own band. Applications for campers are being accepted until June 30.

It’s the final day of station WHYY 90.9’s fundraising drive. I know, I know, you don’t like to be asked for money, because you’re a stingy bastard, and you hate those annoying pledge drives, but just think of all the moments that you’ve spent with good old NPR this year. Checking the weather before you leave the house on Morning Edition; commuting with Radio Times host Marty Moss-Coane; picking-up great conversation starters on Fresh Air with Terry Gross; catching up on your national politics with Neil Conan on Talk of the Nation; giggling with delight over This American Life with Ira Glass; getting in-touch with musical history with Nick Spitzer on American Roots. Phillyist could go on and on. Let’s just say, NPR has got the good stuff. And they’re not just radio. This year they also brought us www.thenextmayor.com, a site filled with the real dirt on our mayoral election, minus the attack ads. If you’re still on of the 30% of undecided Philadelphians, check it out.
Maybe you've been missing out, all this time, on www.BadmintonStamps.com, written by Philabuster and SkinnySlim, two witty, sometimes charmingly snarky, guys who are way more up on the music-slash-party scene in Philadelphia and Brooklyn than you are. Their great site has two battling playlists to keep you entertained at work; music and other news from Philly and that still-sometimes affordable borough; and hot links to songs carefully paired with the long soundbite-sized posts. Check it out.
As a tribute to Rick D, Tritone's Co-Owner and Booker, who passed away from a sudden heart attack on April 7th, Tritone is hosting "A Month of Sundays." The event was organized by Beth Boccassini, who works at both Tritone and Bob and Barbara's. It started on April 15th, with Rock Tits DJs, and continued last Sunday, as DJs Evile Mademoiselle Memphis and Thunderchicken spun some of Rick D's favorite music.
Girls Rock Philly is part of a foundation that works to run summer camps for local girls, ages ten through eighteen, in which they get the opportunity to "make their own band." In the process, they do musical training, while also honing their song writing skills and learning how to design band merchandise. Girls Rock Camp began in Portland, Oregon, in 2000, and this year will be its first summer in Philly.
Phillyist told you a while back about how Philly Car Share was gearing up to offer you more than just reliable transportation. If you were planning on looking into this, tonight is your night.
Jill's Take:
that is.

Soulwax Nite Versions (Warning! Site design is horrifying!) is a band composed of DJs from 2ManyDJs. They're big in Belgium and England, but they're touring the US for the first time this month, and they'll be playing together right here in Philly at Pure tonight. Things start off with a performance by Soulwax Nite Versions which "could possibly change your life!!!" A DJ set by 2ManyDJs follows. Free Sparks and PBRs will be available from 9 to 11. Foreign DJs playing rock music? Then going back to being DJs? It's crazy!
