The last time we wrote about The Sea and Cake coming through town was June of last year. Since then, the band that's named after a misinterpretation of a title of a song by a band that's even more obscure have put together a new album called Car Alarm. We were slightly disturbed to find the album has more than Sea and Cake's traditional ten tracks, but thankfully nothing else about it is much of a departure from their previous work. It's still good old, reliable, mellow, catchy indie rock. Our favorite tracks are "Aerial," "On a Letter," and "Weekend." You can get a free download of "Aerial," as well as a number of other great Sea and Cake tracks, if you head over to the R5 Productions website and scroll down to the section about the show. Oh yeah, there's a show! Sea and Cake will be playing the First Unitarian Church with Death Vessel this Friday night. Check it out.

It's fair to say that Built to Spill is one of my favorite bands of all time. Their music is eerie and layered; their lyrics clever, funny, and evocative; and their many guitars create a massive wall of sound that can totally knock your socks off. Their early work, on discs like The Normal Years and There's Nothing Wrong with Love, is dirty and fun, but things took a turn for the complex with the release of their first major label album, Perfect From Now On, in 1997. The songs on this disc are longer, with more of an epic, prog rock feel to them (yes, that's a compliment), and the sound in general seems more polished, deliberate, and carefully thought-out. A particular favorite of mine is the album-opener, "Randy Described Eternity," which does indeed, as the title suggests, consist of a rather awesome (in both the classic and modern senses) description of eternity. "Stop the Show," with its amazing and lengthy instrumental intro, is another kick-ass track. But really all the tracks are pretty fantastic.

We're excited about the night of Art, Music, & Film being planned by Studio 34 for August 23rd in West Philly. They're planning an art extravaganza celebrating the premiere of the short film In this place by Cait Davis.

We like dance. We like film. Put ‘em together and you got a series preview. Bryn Mawr Film Institute will be screening two offerings from the Bolshoi Theatre: The Pharaoh’s Daughter tomorrow night and Bolt next Thursday, both at 7:30PM. The screenings serve as a preview of the BMFI fall series of ballet and film, which we await in a pool of anticipatory drool.
