Yo, Philly in the News

  • In other unpleasant Penn news, police are investigating an alleged rape during a party at the Penn chapter house of the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity. Sources say the alleged rapist is another Penn student, but not a member of the fraternity.
  • Extra, Extra

  • Governor Rendell is all fired up about the people who are still questioning President Obama's citizenship. We're kind of tired of the story ourselves, so we appreciated where he was coming from when he referred to these protestors, or "birthers," as being "absolutely nuts."
  • And how about some more bad news about money? "The downturn in Philadelphia's housing market - fewer homes changing hands, at lower prices - has created a growing hole in the city budget, likely to reach $10 million to $15 million by midyear."
  • Commenting on a newly released report about the the West Nickel Mines Amish School standoff on Oct. 2, the Pennsylvania state trooper who was in command says the important lesson learned is that "the nation's front-line police officers need better training and more equipment."
  • Some news on area bridges: first, be aware that the South Street Bridge is going to be closed overnight tonight, from 9PM to 5AM, for routine maintenance (read: they're going to try to keep it from crumbling into the river for a little bit longer). Second, the Inquirer has an article with some more details about next year's $100 million-plus reconstruction project on the Walt Whitman Bridge.
  • Mayoral candidate Dwight Evans has decided to embrace wholeheartedly a demographic the other candidates have so far ignored: the LGBT community. He promises to support openly gay political candidates, support legislation protecting equality for gay people, and even create a special police unit for dealing with LGBT issues. This isn't coming out of nowhere; Evans has a history of supporting gay rights. And this is a pretty safe play in historically liberal, gay-friendly Philly. But we're still impressed.
