  • Click here; prepare to squee. New baby orangutan at the Philadelphia Zoo needs a name—and your help.
  • You may have caught this on our Twitter feed over the weekend, but after homering twice last night, we thought this love letter to Chase Utley was especially deserved.

    National Poetry Day: Phillies Edition

Today happens to be National Poetry Day for our friends across the pond. And for those of us here in Philadelphia—you know, on the winning side of that little revolution—it's Game 2 of the NLDS between the Phightin's and the Rockies.

The MLB announced the roster for the All Star game this past weekend. The Phils pulled out with three roster spots sending Chase Utley, Raul Ibanez and Ryan Howard. And at the helm of this year's National League All Stars team is our very own Charlie Fuqua.

  • In other "upstanding citizen" news, bail was set at $10 million for Jose Carrasquillo, the man charged with raping an 11-year-old and assaulting a 16-year-old in Kensington. We're afraid the bail is a little too high, as Kensington neighbors are going to have trouble scratching together $10 million so that they can bail him out to kick his ass again.

  • Six Drexel University students on a fraternity trip through Lycoming County were in a one-car wreck early yesterday morning that killed two of them, including the chapter's president, and injured the other four. Police would not provide details, including whether alcohol was a factor in the accident or whether the two who died had been wearing seat belts. John Patrick "Johnny" Williamson Jr., 21, of Havertown, and Ian Alexander, 22, of Royersford, died in the 3:30 a.m. accident on Route 15, two miles south of Liberty, Pa., state police said in a written release. The young men had been headed south at the time of the accident.
  • Authorities in Montgomery County have arrested a 20-year-old Norristown man in the robbery and killing of a 22-year-old father of four on Powell Street December 10, police say. Detectives charged Stanley Howard, of DeKalb Street, with murder, robbery and other offenses in the fatal shooting of Jamal Terry, also of DeKalb Street in Norristown. The murder happened at 11 p.m. as Terry and a friend left the Golden Dragon restaurant at Spruce Street and Powell Avenue in Norristown. He was shot even though he had already given up his money, investigators said.
  • Chase Utley needs hip surgery. Chase. Utley. Needs. Hip. [Expletive]. Surgery!! He is expected to be out four to six months. So, best case scenario he’s back in time for spring training with the worst case scenario he’s not back until early June.
  • Now that the election buzz has died down just a tad and the baseball season is over, it’s time to reflect a bit on the month that was. Here’s just a brief look at all the cool happenings since October 5th:

As we feared but warned against, many of last week's post-World Series win celebrants got a little carried away (Pat Burrell, sadly, among them). Even Chase Utley couldn't act with complete decorum.

We’ve had some amazing athletes grace our city in the last 25 years. Some of the greatest to ever play their game have suited up and thrilled the fans of Philadelphia.

Well, this Phillyist was going to write a nice little article comparing the Phillies and Rays at each position and determine who has the edge. I had this idea yesterday, but decided to hold off a day on writing it. Unfortunately, the Inquirer already wrote it this morning and I am, as Lao Tzu once said, “shit out of luck.”

Philadelphia and Tampa Bay have unfinished business. Not in the, “I left some TPS Reports to finish on Monday,” kind of way. No. Philly and Tampa have Beatrix Kiddo and Bill kind of unfinished business.

You gotta give Derek Lowe some credit for taking it like a man. After his sinkerball silenced the Phillies’ bats for five innings, he hung a few up in the zone and suddenly the Dodgers were trailing the game. Even though those homers were just over the wall, he didn’t blame the ballpark. Even though Shane Victorino only got on base in the sixth because of a botched play by Rafael Furcal, Lowe didn’t fume and call out his players like John Lackey did in the Angels-Red Sox series.

This Phillyist spent most of yesterday soaked to the bone and freezing.

    Happy Portugal Day!

  • Embattled PA Gaming Control Board Chairman Tad Decker is stepping down, possibly to return to his former law firm, which represents one of the would-be casinos. Insert snide remark about lawyers' ethics here.
  • We would be terrible, awful, no good Phillies Phans (see what we did there?) if we didn't take the opportunity to congratulate Chase Utley, Cole Hamels and Aaron Rowand on their selection to the 2007 All-Star Game. We'll be honest - we were expecting that Utley would be elected starting second baseman, and we were fairly certain King Cole would make the cut on the mound. We were, however, pleasantly surprised to see Rowand make the team as a reserve. We've enjoyed watching Rowand's brand of gritty play since he was on the White Sox, and are particularly pleased that the rest of baseball appears to be taking notice.

To clear up any speculation of bias, we at Phillyist absolutely love the Phillies. Pat Burrell? Not so much.

There's a lot of reasons to hate today. Either you were alone last night or are now hung over from Valentine's Day celebrations. And everyone's cold -- mind-numbingly cold.

So the dust has settled. The two biggest moves made by yesterday’s trade deadline were the Phillies sending Bobby Abreu and Cory Lidle to the Yankees, and the Cubs trading out Cy Young Winner Greg Maddux to the Dodgers.

Not that we needed it, but this weekend was yet more proof of how being a Phillies fan is by far the most aggravating occupation known to mankind. After interviewing Dawn Staley on Tuesday, Phillyist stuck around in D.C. for the Phils' four-game series against the Nationals. We now realize that, as usual, our optimism of Thursday afternoon was a big mistake.

After two excruciating losses, the Phillies beat the Mets this afternoon at Shea Stadium, 5-3, to avoid the series sweep and come back home for the weekend on a high note. The Fightins' got on the board early thanks to first inning homers from Bobby Abreu and Ryan Howard, but similar to the last two games, gave up the lead in the next inning, and the game was tied at 3-3 until the seventh.
