On Cloud XIX

American brasserie XIX (Nineteen) is located on the top floor of the Park Hyatt at the Bellevue, right at Broad and Walnut, and its website boasts that it is the highest restaurant in Philadelphia. With four balconies, all of which offer a breezy and spectacular panoramic view, the whole place has got a swank, jet-set kind of feel, and the fabulous thing is their menus are incredibly varied. One can enjoy oysters on the half-shell at the raw bar, mango mojitos at the regular bar, or antioxidant smoothies from the new juice bar.

While it was a little annoying to have to step around this guy on the way into work when my office was on Broad Street, I can't help but feel that I'm missing out on him now that I don't make it into Center City as often...

You have a CBS affiliate, so surely you could have talked to somebody in Philadelphia about our Subway system. For starters, nobody here would ever say they were riding on the metro. That's DC, Montreal, Paris, and Berlin. Oh wait. That last one is just a song...

Proofreading Philly tries to capture typos, wordos, and all other kinds of grammatical mistakes that we see around the city. But we need your help! Email photos to us from your computer or your phone, and show the city that you care about good grammar.

Looks like Broad Street had a Barack attack last night.

We didn't think so.

To the 2008 Philadelphia Phillies:

  • This weekend a number of political superstars will be coming to the region, including Sarah Palin, who'll be dropping the first puck at the Flyers' regular-season opener at the Wachovia Center.
  • Due to the recent loss of $1.4 million in federal funding, and accreditation problems, the Berean Institute, a North Philadelphia landmark that has provided vocational and business education to African-Americans for 109 years, could go out of business as early as Friday. The state is also evicting the school from the building it has occupied since 1973. Berean supporters are calling for a rally at the school at noon Thursday.
  • We just love it when art students put these things up on YouTube.

  • Who will really decide the outcome of Pennsylvania's April 22nd primary: the voters, or the delegates? Perhaps the real answer is the gays! Meanwhile, Obama had fun with the college crowd at Penn State.
  • Dear Philadelphia:

Fun around town, for $10 or less:

  • The latest poll in Pennsylvania shows Hillary Clinton's lead against Obama shrinking, and also suggests that regardless of which candidate wins the Democratic primary, he or she will have a close, tough fight against John McCain. Meanwhile, the Montgomery County Democratic Committee is meeting tonight to choose candidates for the April 22nd primary, and they just might endorse a presidential candidate, too.
  • Saint Joe's will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 5PM today to officially open its new Hawks' Landing parking and retail facility at 54th and City Avenue. Hawks' Landing is a $19 million project that features a five-story, 460-space garage, a new and expanded University Bookstore, and a Cosi restaurant underneath.
  • Finally! The Day of Days, only hours away from the Hour of Hours, when the bright and beautiful dawn of the Weekend shall arise above our spellbound eyes, pushing the darkness and decrepitude of the week deep into the recesses of distant memory! Huzzah! Huzzah!

Today we have basketball, masturbation, and ancient, unrequited love. What more can we say?

It's nasty out, but don't let the weather keep you from exploring all that this city's artisans and art curators have to offer!

  • Area artists, lingerie designers, the burlesque troupe Bawdy Girls, and avant-gardistes will gather tonight in Northern Liberties to begin a month-long online auction of eighteen "corsets for a cure," with proceeds going to Philadelphia's Linda Creed Breast Cancer Foundation. A raffle and prizes donated by area merchants will benefit Andrea Collins Smith of Fishtown, whose blog about her battle with cancer is widely read.
  • A man was walking north on Broad Street near Somerset in North Philadelphia, just before 5PM, when someone ran up to him from behind and, he thought, punched him in the back. He looked back and saw the mysterious person slip away around a corner. Then he kept walking. Minutes later, a passer-by told him, "Dude, you got a knife in your back." He walked to a nearby firehouse and was taken to Temple University Hospital, where he remained as of yesterday in stable condition.
