Yo, Philly in the News

  • Fortunately, Philly got some measure of victory over New York yesterday, as the Eagles trounced the New Jersey York Giants, 40-17.
  • Yo, Philly in the News

  • A 21-year-old West Chester University student was found dead, shot in the face, in North Philadelphia. Police are questioning the student's boyfriend.
  • After two stupid early games, a snow-out, and a late, late game, Phillies fans can rejoice in a game we'll actually get to watch. Tonight's 6:07 p.m. start time still doesn't make a whole lot of sense (what's with the :07, anyway?), but it's a hell of a lot better than last night, anxiously trying to keep our eyes open at 2 a.m., watching to make sure Brad Lidge didn't blow the perilous 1-run lead the Phils gained in the top of the 9th after a hard-fought game.

  • The Thal-Gilmore murders have dissuaded us from even the first thought of entering the drug trafficking business. And while we're at it, we think we'll scratch concert promoting off the list too.

  • Yesterday, a judge dealt a crushing blow to Mayor Nutter's plan to balance the city budget, ordering him to immediately halt plans to close 11 library branches at the close of business today. Common Pleas Judge Idee Fox ruled in favor of seven library patrons and three City Council members who sued Nutter last week, citing a 20-year-old ordinance requiring Council to approval to close city buildings. Nutter's administration vowed an appeal to the state Commonwealth Court. Nutter called Fox's ruling a "complete violation of the fundamental tenets" of the city's Home Rule Charter.
  • When the morning dawned on Philadelphia today, everything had changed.

Well, this Phillyist was going to write a nice little article comparing the Phillies and Rays at each position and determine who has the edge. I had this idea yesterday, but decided to hold off a day on writing it. Unfortunately, the Inquirer already wrote it this morning and I am, as Lao Tzu once said, “shit out of luck.”

Philadelphia and Tampa Bay have unfinished business. Not in the, “I left some TPS Reports to finish on Monday,” kind of way. No. Philly and Tampa have Beatrix Kiddo and Bill kind of unfinished business.

I was eight years old when my dad woke me up in the middle of the night to watch Mitch Williams strike out Bill Pecota and send the Phillies to the 1993 World Series. The following week in school, I taught myself to draw the Phillies’ logo for the construction-paper pennants we hung in the windows. To this day, it’s the only thing I can still successfully draw aside from a rather pathetic looking Dachshund.

The last successful invasion of Los Angeles was in 1990 when West Philadelphian (born and raised) Will Smith conquered Bel-Air and ruled for six years as its Fresh Prince alongside his loyal friend, Duke of Silver Spoons, Carlton Banks.

Showtime continues as the Phillies put a little mustard on their mustard last night and sent CC Sabathia packing in the 4th.

This Phillyist spent most of yesterday soaked to the bone and freezing.

Chris Mustazza and Phil Sandick, our resident Phillies writers, return this week with talk of one-game wonder Eude Brito, Jim Thome and the Phils' playoff chances heading into September.
