Bands I Caught: Fursaxa, Fan of Friends, War on Drugs, King Kong Ding Dong Venue: The Parlor Tucked away on South Broad next to "You, Me, and Wee" (which, incidentally, seems like the perfect venue for another POPPED! band, Pissed Jeans), the Parlor is a surprisingly cozy venue, despite its unremarkable storefront. I slid through the front door and followed klip//collective's electric-blue polka dots of light back to the main room, where I caught Fursaxa......

Bands I Caught: Public Record, Feather Mills, Phil Moore Browne, Hail Social Venue: Northern Liberties Block Party After the idle talk and identically polished wood floors, after the occasionally tired heads draped over banisters at 1 o’clock and often stiff legs standing in stuffy bars for sets that last a bit too long, after loads of manicured details that so easily lend themselves to overwrought introductions, it was nice to just relax outside for once.......

Bands I Caught: Illinois, Bardo Pond, The Spinto Band, Dr. Dog Venue: Starlight Ballroom When I saw a newspaper ad with the POPPED! lineup several weeks ago, the Starlight Ballroom show, especially, enticed me. Not only because that was my favorite venue south of Girard but because I was a big fan of Dr. Dog and enjoyed what I had heard of Illinois and The Spinto Band. And right from jump the event exceeded my......

Bands I Caught: The Bad News Bats, The Northern Liberties, The Mountain High, The Lowbudgets Venue: Millcreek Tavern Granted, I have virgin ears for this kind of thing. But for me, last night was hard. And not hard in that "I could hardly keep my eyes open" sort of way or that "struggling to find words to describe it" sort of way. Not difficult. Just hard. My Millcreek experience was the antithesis of Monday night.......

Bands I Caught: Barking Spiders, Bear is Driving, Normal Love, Venue: The Avant Gentleman’s Lodge The Avant Gentleman’s Lodge is located just around the corner from the 40th St. El stop, which makes me love it. As does the tiny factory feel, the hand-painted wooden bench sitting in the lot beside the old ivory car I’d knock an old lady over to drive, the twinkling Christmas lights, the giant paper maiche phoenix dangling from the......

Phillyist would like to take a moment to officially welcome Warren Longmire into the fold. (You may have already caught his inaugural post.) Warren, a fab spoken word poet in his own right, joins us to tell Phillyist readers about open mic nights around the city, as well as to be very willing to cover things that need covering, and to just generally be a lot of fun to hang out with at shows. Bands......

Bands I Caught: The Cobbs, The Asteroid #4 Venue: Johnny Brenda's This season in hipster fashion, it's all about stripes. Horizontally-striped sweaters. Diagonally-striped tunics. Vertically-striped pants. Stripes, stripes, stripes. You just can't be in a band without 'em! In all seriousness, this post marks the beginning of Phillyist's POPPED! coverage. We can't guarantee we'll be out every night, or that we'll see all the bands if we do, but we're trying our best. If you......
