Studio 34, home of a recently featured Mom and Baby yoga mention, is starting a fantastic new class for kids (ages 18 months to 4 years) and they want you to try it out for free. Today, October 15th, check out the kids' ZoomDance series at 10:30 a.m. What is ZoomDance? I didn't know, either, but Studio 34 was kind enough to explain it to me. A high-energy class of dance, music, story-telling, and imagination which promotes literacy and creative expression. In other words, it's kinda a perfect class. Each week the group will read a different book and then act it out, inventing characters, exploring the space, and showing off—everything kids love to do. A seven week course, the whole session will run you $70, however if you sign up before the 15th, they'll knock off ten. Lately, I've loved going to farmers' markets with my daughter. It helps me get my shopping done, supports local farms, and could keep my baby amazed for hours. The site of a bright red tomato, the smell of pot after pot of basil, an Amish guy's crazy beard—she loves it all. Farmers' markets are hitting their stride, tomatoes and bell peppers are in their prime, and best of all, you can spend the whole day meandering around the tables and never spend more than twenty bucks tops.

I wanted to start this column with a reminder that First Friday is quickly approaching, and if you haven't ventured out into the fun and frivolity, you should give it a try. Now before you rush off to write me an angry email, lecturing me about all the problems parents with toddlers struggle, and how DARE I recommend taking an overactive two year old into a art gallery, let me say this: I understand my daughter is small enough to strap to my chest and cart around wherever I please, but I have friends. And those friends have older, and more... let's say, expressive, children. Many of them make it a point to venture out every month and check out their neighborhood's contribution to First Friday. While its true many First Friday events are clustered around Old City, with the explosion of small, hip little galleries around Northern Liberties and the Fairmount neighborhoods, most families should be able to find something in walking distance. Its not all paintings and free wine samples, there are interactive welding demonstrations, multimedia displays, even movie screenings. First Friday is, as always, free for everyone, so give it a try!
