When we were offered a tour of The Ayer on Washington Square, it felt like a dilemma. Curiosity alone was enough for us to want to do it, and the added photo opportunity was another incentive. But, after viewing The Ayer website and knowing that the condos would be extremely luxurious, we battled with the question of whether an entry would seem too favorable. Above all, we wanted it to be honest. So, to......

So says the building's website, and it's right. Just a few hours ago, phillyskyline.com broke news of a supertall skyscraper proposal for the property bounded by 18th, 19th, Arch, and Cuthbert Streets (currently a surface parking lot). At 1500 feet, the American Commerce Center would dwarf Philly's recently-crowned king, the Comcast Center (975 ft), and if completed today, would stand as the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere and fourth-tallest building in the world. All......

The shapeless dough of the internet, formed into tasty pellets and baked to perfection, just for you. Djimon Hounsou revealed at a press junket that he’ll be starring in his dream project soon, which he described only as a comic book trilogy. Could he be playing Luke Cage? Black Panther? Or does it have something to do with Tintin? We'll just have to wait and see. What would it look like if Saul Bass did......

One of our most popular posts of late, Matt Johnson's photo essay on the final days of the Tidewater Grain Elevator, mentions Chris Daugherty of The Necessity for Ruins. Although Matt couldn't be there for the building's implosion, Chris was – and a few days later, he posted this video.......

Every weekday of December (except for December 25, that is), Phillyist will be counting down to 2008 with our highlights from the past year and our predictions for the next. If you have a list you'd like to submit, let us know! You guys picked the items in this list - which made this post a lot easier to write! And we thank you for that, because we're really kind of burning out on this......

Wednesday's event on South Broad Street was as much a six-block-long performance as it was a lighting display. Even before the brief speeches by three of the event's organizers, the Avenue of the Arts was a circus of performers on stilts or in costume. Afterwards, the street became even more active as five bands started playing and the crowds lined up to purchase food from the outdoor stands set up by nearby restaurants. Terra......

Architecture in Helsinki (AIH) are shilling for Sprint. And we're totally okay with that. Now that we are TiVo-less, we have to watch commercials like everyone else. So it may not have been news to you, but we almost spit out our Blueberi and coke last night when we heard "Souvenirs" playing in the background of a Sprint spot. They've come far from when we last so them a year ago, and already they're......

We first heard of Architecture in Helsinki a few years ago when they were touring with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. As in, wtf is an Architecture in Helsinki. Then we got to Troc early enough that night to find out exactly what it was: a six piece collective from Australia with a frenetic energy that made them completely irresistible. They never stopped moving. Each time they finished a song, everyone switched instruments and......

When I was younger, I wanted to study abroad in Ireland because I wanted to pick up the accent. That dream was never to be, but my love for the Irish accent lives on. And so that, combined with my affinity for the work of Martin McDonagh, led me straight into the arms of Lantern Theater Company's new production of McDonagh's The Lonesome West, directed by David O'Connor. Unlike last season's production of The......

Protest over national vs. regional chains, the never-ending debate over the place of cars and bicycles in our metropolises, professional sports scandals, remembering a solemn day, and being issued a search warrant - it all happened across our sites this week! Another banner week at Chicagoist started off with daily reports from food writer Lisa Shames on her attempt to eat only locally grown and raised foodstuffs all week as part of a farmers market......

It's been a wretched, sticky summer as usual, but we've still managed to hit the pavement to see our overgrown baby mature. Within a month, the Comcast Center will have a completed glass exterior, but we'll still get to watch the development of the outdoor plaza along JFK Blvd, the atrium and entrance to Suburban Station, and best of all, the unveiling of the lighting scheme. (Don't confuse the construction lights seen so far......

Yesterday, a few vertical beams brought our concrete, steel, and glass behemoth to 975 ft. Congratulations, Philadephia. You've got a new tallest building, an honor enjoyed by One Liberty Place for nineteen years. Inquirer photographer Sara J. Glover had the topping-out festivities covered, while Barbara L. Johnston showed the ironworkers doing their thing high above the streets. Comcast Center Construction Photos: phillyskyline.com, SkyscraperSunset.com Photos by author, SkyscraperSunset.com.......

Holy smokes! Giant fish on the MTA, Paris Hilton in jail, then out, then in again, Al Gore, goatses, blumpkins, Matt Damon, and baby art critics! It's been a busy week across the Ist-A-Verse, and here's a smattering of what's been going on. In Gothamist's neck of the woods, they found out that many things are possible: A man caught a 40+ pound fish off the Rockaways and took it home on the subway. Graffiti......

LAist is experimenting with blogging dates from J-Date, but finds the best men are found offline. Some date vicariously online and that is one reason why porn is big -- really freaking big -- so they ask if they should cover XXX since the heart of it lays in the city's San Fernando Valley. A writer grapples with her food porn photography obsession, another gets censored on Flickr, one gets scooped by the LA......

In early October we posted about Philly's pink skyline lighting for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The citywide coordination during October is impressive, but our favorite color scheme happens in late June and early July for Independence Day. Let's hope this year brings a record number of red, white, and blue skyscrapers. Photo by author, SkyscraperSunset.com.......

With the constant development in the Rittenhouse commercial district over the past few years, the fact that there's a block lingering in the area that doesn't bolster multiple shops and restaurants is simultaneously mind boggling and and comforting. And, yet, if you wander down Sansom, between 19th and 20th, that's just what you'll find. Heading west, on the north side of the street, you'll first come upon Oh! Shea's Pub, followed by a side entrance......

Wandering through Liberty Place this Saturday afternoon, Phillyist came across the statue pictured to the right, as well as a bunch of others created from canned goods. Turns out Philadelphia's architecture and construction communities teamed up to sponsor Canstruction, a national charity, which was created by the Society for Design Administration. This is the first annual installment of this in Philadelphia, and it was done to benefit Philabundance. You can visit the exhibit from......

Spring is when we get busy here in the Ist-A-Verse. Very busy. But, after staying bundled-up indoors all winter, it's nice for us to be out, about, and collecting things to write about for you. Here's a glimpse at what's been keeping your favorite citybloggers busily away from home and out of bed. For LAist, strong winds attacked LA on the same day the Feds raided the Crips. Not to fear, though: the Japanese version......
