• One of the Philadelphia Zoo's former residents, Asian elephant Dulary, safely arrived yesterday at the sanctuary in rural Tennessee that's to be her new home.
• The union that represents faculty and coaches at the 14 state-owned universities in Pennsylvania has voted overwhelmingly to strike "if contract negotiations with the State System of Higher Education break down." Current contracts expire June 30, so the earliest strike date would be July 1. Here's hoping negotiations go well!
• The number of police pursuits in Pennsylvania went down 5 percent in 2006 from the year before, and the number of people killed in those pursuits also went down (from 13 to 12, none of them bystanders). But one third of the pursuits resulted in crashes.
• Residents of Delaware County are not happy about the idea of the FAA redirecting air traffic over their homes (in an attempt to open up crowded airspace and reduce the number of delayed flights), and they let the FAA know how they felt, loudly and often, at a public meeting in Essington last night. "FAA officials said a final decision will be made this summer and they could start using the new takeoff paths as soon as August."
• The Inquirer gets the current mayor's opinion on the race to decide the next mayor. The short version: voters are still confused, and the overall campaign is oddly quiet.
• Police responded to a 911 call last night in North Philadelphia about children being left home alone, and did indeed find three young children alone in "a ramshackle home that reeked of feces." The Department of Human Services and Special Victims Unit decided to remove the children from the home, but then the mother arrived and got into a heated confrontation with police that led to her going upstairs and getting a 2-foot-long machete with which she threatened to kill the police, and her children. When she ran at an officer with the weapon, she was shot, and taken to Temple University Hospital, where she remains in critical condition.
• CBS3 anchorwoman Alycia Lane is in trouble with Rich Eisen's wife over some saucy photos and emails that she sent to the NFL network anchor's email address - an address he happens to share with his wife. Lane claims that she and Eisen have been friends for 10 years, have exchanged many emails and photos, and that their relationship is purely platonic. Hmmm...
