NBC 10 gets Milton Street exclusive

NBC_10_Street_Nov_29_2006.jpgNBC 10 managed to get an exclusive interview on Wednesday with Milton Street, the brother of Philadelphia mayor John Street. Milton Street was recently indicted with federal tax and fraud charges and this was his first interview with the media. The interview was handled by anchor Tim Lake.

Street was cagey and evasive as he was denying the charges against him while Lake seemed a bit out of his league. Some highlights:

Lake: You had no experience in doing these kinds of jobs, yet you got these contracts.
Street: I don't have any experience in these kinds of interviews, yet I'm sitting here interviewing with you.

Lake pressed Street about the possible appearance of nepotism:

Lake: Do you think being the mayor's brother had anything to do with it?
Street: No.
Lake: Did the mayor ...
Street: I'll tell you what had something to do with it. For years, I fought in this city. For years I was out in the community. For years, I built my reputation as a fighter. I built my reputation as a person who would get things done. I built my reputation as a guy who wouldn't back down on something right. So this "Street Name" I built. I heard Mr. Meehan sitting up there talking about that I exploited the Street Name. I am the Street Name.

Lake then moved to press on Street’s prior actions:

Lake: We have covered extensively your history throughout Philadelphia and all the things you have done. Did at any time did your brother offer you advice or did you consult him on the contracts?

Street: No.

Lake: Not at all.

Street: Never.

Lake: Not once.

Street: Not once.

Lake: And yet you are still very close to your brother.

Street: Not once.

The station gave some heavy play to the interview, leading both the 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. newscasts with it, as well as placing it online. One can only wonder if the station’s political contacts were the reason they got the interview; after all, no other station in the city has an anchor married to a prominent Democratic Party politician. Still, this may be a nice November sweeps ratings boost for NBC 10.
