Yo, Philly in the News

- About 30 people were injured (thankfully, none of them too seriously) on Saturday when two SEPTA R2 commuter trains crashed head-on into each other between the Crestmont and Willow Grove stations. An investigation into what happened is still ongoing, but the current guess is the old standby: human error. Shuttle buses were handling transport between the Warminster and Glenside stations, but there aren't any advisories on SEPTA's site about that right now, so we suspect that if full service hasn't been restored already, it will be by the time this post goes up.
- Speaking of vehicle crashes, there were a couple of what you might call "unscheduled landings" for two small planes pulling banner ads over Dover Township in our neighboring state of NJ on Saturday. One experienced engine trouble and managed to make it to a field for an emergency landing. The other had a far more dramatic emergency landing right in the middle of a shore-bound highway (Route 37) at 1 in the afternoon, getting its banner tangled in electrical wires and striking street signs and a vehicle on its way down. The plane finally came to rest in front of an International House of Pancakes, where it sat, blocking traffic, for a few hours. No one was hurt in either incident. And hopefully the pilot of the second plane got to have some pancakes for his/her trouble. Assuming, of course, the accident wasn't his/her fault in the first place, in which case, no pancakes for you!
- Hey, it's Independence Day! Which means it's time to welcome America here in Philly. The Daily News has posted a handy list of stuff you can do in the city today; check it out.
