Yo, Philly in the News

- Skateboarders gathered at LOVE park last Wednesday because it was June 21st, which, besides being the first day of summer, is also Go Skateboarding Day. Of course, as we all know, skateboarding is not allowed in LOVE park - but the kids who were there last Wednesday claim they weren't even doing that when they and a 49-year-old mother of one of them got screamed at and even pushed around by police. And so the ancient conflict between cops and skaters continues...
- This weekend's heavy rain caused plenty of problems, including disruption of service for the Amtrak trains running between Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. on Monday morning.
- An update on the World's Ugliest Dog contest: our local contestant, Pee Wee the Chinese Crested/Japanese Chin mix, won in the mutt division, but sadly did not take top honors; those went instead to a slightly more pure, though apparently far more ugly, Chinese Crested from Arizona named Archie. Ah, well. Maybe next time, Pee Wee.
- We don't know whether to be amused or afraid - probably a little of both - that the officials at the city's Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility lost track of an inmate while he was still in their own building. They labeled him an escaped prisoner, even though he was apparently just hanging out in the kitchen. D'oh.
