Dear Pat Gillick

No one wanted it to turn out this way, but it has: Little Gavin Floyd has crashed and burned in the big leagues.

Now, we don't completely blame you for what's happened. The kid dazzled in Spring Training, and it was easy to think that he'd be a snug fit in the rotation. But last night's performance of seven runs in 3 and 1/3 innings does not a starter make. And his comments in today's Inquirer aren't promising either. Sounds like you have a head case on your hands.

And while we know pitching is a problem, we hope that you don't use this as an excuse to rush Cole Hamels up to Citizens Bank Park. Yes, he's been promoted to AAA ball, but he's young and needs time to season before he's thrown on the big league mound. We know this town is salivating for a winning team, but we'd rather the pitcher be a great starter with experience than a pipe bomb as a rookie.
